May 2012 Moms

We had the Upper GI done on Friday and

nothing... he took the entire 8 oz. of Barium Contrast, and nothing.  Didn't spit up or throw up once. Now, they are saying nothing is wrong with him... NO! Because when we got home, and fed him about 3 hours later, he basically threw up the entire amount he ate... Im so aggravated right now its not even funny.

And to top of the weekend, the Barium totally blocked him up, and he was pushing and grunting so bad yesterday morning (H and I one year anniversary) that he tore a little bit of his bottom, so we decided to take him back up to Children's ER.  I hated not being able to help him, it was horrible.  Well, he FINALLY passed what we thought was all of it.  It was so hard and big... it was about the diameter of a quarter.  Well, we got home, and once again, started grunting.  Well, I watched how the nurse helped relieve him, so I started doing that, and was able to help him with it.  It happened 2 more times last night.

So, we are continuing with the Similac for spit up, and have decreased his feedings from 8 oz to 6 oz, adding an extra feeding through out the day in hopes of controlling his throwing up.  So far, not too much of a difference, but I hope it will help soon.

Thanks for listening to my story... I'm just so aggravated that they are saying nothing is wrong, even though he has hardly gained any weight...

  • Aw, I'm so sorry.  Poor kid.  Are you planning on taking him to get a second opinion?  I know how much it stinks when you can't seem to help your LO.  Mine has been struggling with reflux and just when I think his medications are helping, it starts up again.  We're planning on taking him to a specialist.  It totally interrupts his sleep until he just gets so tired he finally sleeps through it :( I hope you can get your guy feeling better and gaining weight.

  • His pedi is supposed to be calling this afternoon after she looks at the radiation scan that was done, and I guess we will go from there.  If she says there is nothing, then yes, I will go for a second opinion.

  • Next time you go to the pedi give lo a bottle while you are waiting for the dr. Then they will see what you are talking about when he spits up all over them.  Also, you should talk to them about a possible allergy. 4 months is when my son's allergies showed up. I switched his formula and he was fine. Good luck!
  • yeah Sarah, at his 6 month well check last Wednesday, he threw up about 3-4 times in the half hour that we were there, and they asked when he ate last, assuming it was right before, and I told them its been 3 and a half hours. Thats when they started being pro-active about it.

But yes, Im wondering now if it is a possible allergy.

  • Gosh, I am sorry.  I would be so frustrated too.  I hope your LO gets better and they figure out what is going on.

  • Plus 8oz at once is a lot I know none of my boys ff, bm and ff or ebm have ever taken 8oz at once with out throwing up a ton. I'm surprised they didn't have you switch to soy, of course if its a milk protein allergy the barium wouldn't cause a problem. I'd seek a second opion from another peditrcan if they don't test or treat for milk allergies.

  • I don't know your story, but I had a 'happy spitter' I could not believe how much she spit up and she was a preemie and always near the bottom of the chart. It stressed me out to no end, but around 7 months she basically just stopped and I was glad that I folllowed my ped's advice and did not persue more invasive testing. You say throwing up, technically there is a difference, but it is not really based on quantity. I know it hard to watch your child spit up, let alone it is a pain, but it might just be normal.

  • I haven't been following super closely, but have they considered eosinophilic esophagitis?

I didn't quite know what that was, so I just googled it, and from what I read, no... he doesn't have problems swallowing, or anything like that...

they also said that the Barium moved awesome from his stomach to intestine pretty quick, and there was no areas of concern for blockage or anything like that...

I am going to call my pedi office right now after this comment... Ill let everyone know what they say...

  • I am sorry you are going through this mama. DD is a happy spitter. We have to feed her 3 ounces at a time. If we try 4, 5 or 6, she spits up most of it. Its a pain and she eats often but still doesn't eat more than 28 ounces a day. She loves her solids and is doing much better since starting them. She is gaining weight and is doing well with milestones so we just go with the flow.

I hope you find a solution for him. I have heard that spitting up peaks at 6 mths so it should start getting better if it is just simply a happy spitter.

  • Have you tried Alimentium or Neocate or Elecare? I would definitely go ahead and try it. We had massive feeding issues with my first daughter. The pedi we were seeing then kept telling us we needed to try harder. We finally got pointed in the right direction and ended up at Children's Hospital in Pitts. They still see her a copy of times a year, and she still struggles with eating. At 2 1/2 y/o she is not yet 25lbs. Something else they might consider is a metabolic condition. Also they could try to check for residual feeds. They'd have to drop an NG tube to do that, but it's worth it to know how much fluid is left in her stomach when it's time for the next feeding. GL.
