Preemies

DD was meant to be a peanut

So lately, I have been a little worried about DD size, which mind you no one else is. But, at her last pedi appointment she slowed down a bit on gaining, but still gained. We were very lucky with her that she always gained quite a bit each month. You know how the NICU gets it in our brain to sometimes obsess over weight gain. She was also doing so well that pedi no longer has us doing monthly check ins, she was in for something else. SO i guess I was more shocked because it had been almost 2 months and I expected a big jump.  So I started to ask a million questions. My pedi explained that this is the time when babies both FT and preemie may slow down a bit and then gain again,DD is sitting and rolling all across the room, which burns more calories and he also felt that genetics may be playing their part, DD was not going to be big, I am very petite and DH is average for a guy. My parents kept saying, to me she is built just like you, you have heard all the stories about how petite you were/are. My mom has always said since DD was discharged she wished she could find my growth chart, since I was FT and never on the charts but followed my own curve so there was never a concern. Well fast forward to this weekend, my parents are moving and going through everything to pack and low and behold she found my little health book from the drs!! It is seriously crazy, DD and I are basically right on in length and weight for each month, obviously starting at birth and her due date. I was born at 5 lbs 7 ounces, DD was 5 lbs 15 ounces at DC and that was exactly a week before her DD. At 7 months I was 12 lbs even and our last weight was at about 7- 7.5 months for DD and she was 12 even no joke!!! I am not saying at all that since we are the same size, that is the tell all, end all, DD is her own little being and will grow and gain at her own pace. But I did think that was pretty interesting and cool! DD size is still my trigger for a PMM (as I call it, preemie mom moment) I am working on getting less defensive when people gasp at how tiny she is! ;) And not letting it bother me!

  • I agree very interesting!

DS is VERY small for his age too...he's 9 months (7 adjusted) and about 14.5 lbs.  People look at me funny when I tell them his age.  I am very petite (5' 1") and DH is on the short side of average for height (5' 8") so it was never in the cards for our kids to be big and tall...we actually used to joke when we first got together that we'd have small children someday.  We know DS is healthy and developmentally doing well so that's all that matters to us, AND we know how far he's come in size (he was 2 lbs. 9 oz. at birth).

Good things really do come in small packages in my opinion!

Our stats are pretty much the same! I am 5'1 DH is about 5'8! When DD started measuring small my dr kept saying " I'll tell ya when I am worried, I am not working with much, small people make small babies!" I also agree with we know how far dd has come and she is growing and gaining and hitting all her developmental milestones, so we couldn't be prouder of our little peanut!

  • My daughter is a super peanut also, she's about 13 lbs now. Developmentally she's right at her real age. People think she's about 5 months!

  • That is interesting - and a relief! :-) DD is 18 months and only about 19-20 lbs. She's been walking since she was 11 months, and it always surprises people because they guess that she's much younger. Oh well, peanuts are cute!! :-)
