WTF nanny

It's our nanny's second week at work and she called in sick today with food poisoning. I hope she's really sick and this isn't the start of a trend. Now I have to spend 40 dollars to drop him off at daycare and look like an idiot.

Re: WTF nanny

  • Food poisoning isn't contagious. If I were her I would have shown up.

  • If she's really sick I'm okay with her staying home. I don't think someone with food poisoning could adequately take care of him. I'm just worried she's NOT sick and this is how she'll be. I hate to stay looking for a nanny AGAIN. Maybe this is what you get for what we can pay. worried face

Same, its only her 2nd week. I'd be showing my best foot forward and my work ethic through anything

Uh, have you ever had food poisoning? I spent two days puking and crapping my brains out.

It's not contagious, but if she really does have food poisoning, the poor woman is hardly in physical shape to be at work caring for an infant. I'd rather she was honest about her limitations that day than come watch my kid and be in the bathroom all day.

People are allowed to take sick days, my goodness. It's hardly a comment on her work ethic, esp. The first time.

I was thinking the same thing. Sure, it's inconvenient but she is hardly being a flake.

It actually can be contagious and I would expect to call in for that as a nanny.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I'm not upset that she called in sick, but now I have a doubt in my head about her. I think anyone would if their employee called in sick after 5 days of work on a holiday that most people get.

All we can do is ride it out and hope it isn't a regular thing.

All the above! I've had food poisoning and there is no way she'd even be leaving the bathroom let alone her house.

i'm with these guys. Give the woman a break. If she is taking good care of your child otherwise, I would be wary of becoming adversarial. Good nannies are hard to come by. It isn't a trend yet, so why not give her the benefit of the doubt? And having to arrange for alternate child care for your kid is part of being a parent. I am not sure why you think like you look like an idiot.

  • I was a nanny and went to work with food poisoning...and spent the day in their bathroom. Luckily the oldest was at school and the preschooler could be satisfied with watching movies or playing in his room all day. Had I been watching an infant, no farking way would I have gone in. I shouldn't have in the first place. Cut her some slack. Seriously. It's not like she planned to get food poisoning today.
  • I've never had Veteran's Day off.

  • That sucks. But people do get sick, sometimes getting sick falls on holidays. As far as people saying she should have come in? Dear lord....I had food poisoning when my son was 3 and I ended up calling my mom, crying for her to come tale care of him. When I wasn't under the covers with chills, I was sitting on the toilet with diarrhea and had a bucket in front of me so I could puke at the same time.

I don't think you're being unreasonable. "Food poisoning" is the perfect, "I just want to be sick enough to have an excuse to miss just one day of work" reason and people at work use it ALL of the time. So, if we had a nanny, and she called in five days after she started, I'd have my doubts too. If she really does have food poisoning, okay, sucks for her, but I don't blame you for being upset. I hate when plans change last minute.
