Preemies

Ugh

I posted a question on my bmb about how long it takes for a baby to roll over from back to belly after they start rolling onto their side.  One response was "my son did it yesterday. He'll be three months this week" it really ticked me off. Like good for you but my son just turned 3 months adjusted and that didn't answer the question at all! Glad you got to brag though and run it in.

Eta- rub it in.... Can't edit for some reason.  Tonight is also the night we are moving him to the crib so I'm a bit emotional.  He's almost asleep. I'm crying :-(

  • Hopefully she didn't mean to be insensitive.

My twins are 3 and 1/2 months adjusted and they both started to roll to their sides at about 3 months. They still haven't rolled all the way over. The OT that works with my DS told me to practice slowly helping him roll the rest of the way over. Doing it slowly helps strengthen the muscles. It isn't something I am too concerned about. A lot of 3 months olds that arent premies havent rolled over yet. As long as they keep making progress I am happy.

  • Oh, I hate the "my kid is better" game.

I'm not sure if your question was addressed, but my FT baby didn't really start rolling from back to belly until last month, when he was over 5 months old. It took over a month for him to be comfortable rolling back to belly, and it's only now, a month later, that he's really rolling around.

I'm sorry it's a rough night for you.

  • Back to belly is tough to do. S started rolling back to belly about a month ago close to 4m adjusted and J just started doing it consistently within the past week. PT and pedi both said this is a normal timeframe.

ETA: "Normal" is a relative term, all babies develope uniquely.

I would say that Adalyn started consistently rolling in both directions within the last 3 weeks, and she is about 6 months adjusted. I'm on mobile so I can't see the ticker.

Totally agree.  There's a big range of normal, and rolling can be hard for some babies, whether they're preemies or term babies.  Your little guy's doing awesome, and he'll get it!  Hang in there!

Definitely not worried about when he will roll, I am really proud of what he is doing it was more of a how long from rolling to side to rolling over type of thing, not an age thing.  I guess that's where the confusion was... I wasn't sure if it was one of those things where he rolls on his side one day and over completely on the next or it takes a few weeks... and I guess it is different with everyone.  Yesterday was the first time I even saw him start to rock to the side so I was shocked when he got on the side... I am not focusing on the calendar, just on how great he is doing :-)

  • You are brave for posting questions like that over there. I lurk on the August board since that was supposed to be my birth month too, but haven't posted since before 19 weeks when my pregnancy took a down turn. It is hard reading stuff like that, and I don't blame you for being annoyed. She's just a proud mom and doesn't realize the hell you've been through otherwise she wouldn't say it like that I hope!
Like you said your son is doing fantastic! My DS is a couple of weeks older than your's I believe, and he's not even rolling to his side yet. I read something on the Internet once that helped me someone said that if preemies met ALL their milestones according to even their adjusted age with no delays, then it would be as if the preemie thing had never happened. Well that's not realistic! Our PT said rolling isn't really expected until about 4 mos adjusted, so we're just waiting. I know what you mean though I don't like braggers either.
  • Sorry for the lack of punctuation. I hate bump mobile.
  • DS2 was a late term preemie (he is 3 now) born at 35wk, 5d. He rolled one way at 4mos and don't remember how many days actual age, got to one side around 7mos actual age, but then didn't roll fully the other way until 9mos and some days.  FWIW, he has CP so the delayed rolling thing was expected (not trying to alarm you BTW).
  • My Lo has been stuck on back to side for a month and a half now, she's also almost 3 mos adjusted. We get the occasional surprised flop onto the belly from her side. She's my first so I have no idea how long it takes to progress from one to the other, but I'm kinda hoping the belly flops are an indicator that she will start trying soon. These milestones are so exciting and frustrating at the same time.
