Anyone been to the Wisconsin Dells?

Dh and I are looking for a place to go in Feb. on vacation when my vacation time starts over. My mom and her SO own time shares that they will let us trade for where ever we want to go and we just have to pay a small amount for the transfer fee and then we don't have to pay anymore to stay a week at a really nice resort. We want to go some where we can drive to so that we don't have to purchase plane tickets. We went to Breckenridge, CO in Sept 2009 on our honeymoon using their time share and we had an awesome and relaxing time. We were thinking of going back to some where in CO, but it would also be nice to go some where new. My mom suggested The Dells, they have went and had a great time. Is that something that would be more of a family trip though? I like to do all the cheesey tourist stuff though(we went on a mine tour in CO and also toured The Stanley on our way back home). We live in western Iowa. Any thoughts about The Dells or suggestions of places within driving distance for us to take a vacay?

Re: Anyone been to the Wisconsin Dells?

  • We went when I was a kid...I loved it.  From what I can remember it seemed like a warm weather vacation but that maybe because we went in the summer...haha.  I had a lot of fun doing the museums, duck boat tour and a lot of mini golf ;o)

I believe there are a lot of winter activities as well.  Not much help...

  • If it is just you and YH I would go some place else.  It is a family vacation in my opinion.  We went the summer I was PG with Violet and we went when Oliver was a toddler.  I have never gone in the winter though. For us it is only a three-four hour drive.

To me the Dells is a huge tourist trap.  I would go Tofte on the north shore of Lake Superior and stay at a resort like Blue Finn Bay and go skiing at Lutsen.  Even Duluth is fun in the winter, frozen water falls, a night life, plus you can ski at Spirit Mountain while over looking lake superior.   It is almost the same distance for you as the Dells.

I guess what I'm saying if you want a nice adult relaxing trip don't go to the Dells, I'm sure there are more adult oriented resorts if you look though.  If you like cheesy things like your food delivered by a remote controlled train, Upside down museums, kid filled water parks, feeding deer and magic, the Dells is the place to be.

If you do go to the Dells I suggest going in the summer and staying at hotel Rome, they are part of the Mt. Olympus theme park.  They have an outdoor water park that will blow your mind and they have an amusement park with a ton of great go kart tracks.  Your older son would love going.  Park passes are included with your stay.

It says that there is on site skiing. Dh wants to go skiing, but it's so expensive in CO. Dh and I are kind of big kids anyways. I  like doing all the touristy stuff, we never took vacations when I was a kid.

  • If you like touristy stuff you will like the Dells.  I am just not a huge fan, but the little cottages at the resort look comfy and fun.    If you are used to skiing in mountains you may be disappointed by their downhill skiing..  I still suggest Duluth or Tofte especially for skiing! They are so beautiful!.Big Smile

Maybe, I just want to go to Duluth or Tofte. Hrrumph!

  • He's only skied once and me never and I am all kinds of clumsy. I am in love with the little cabins. I will look at the other places and see what we had have available with the time share. Thanks penny!
