Any runners?

Let me preface this with saying that I was a sprinter (400 & 800) in college, so my body is used to weightlifting (we'd do power cleans, snatches, squats, the works), intervals on the track and miles.  I still maintain doing a lot of this, but now that I'm pregnant I'm wondering what I can keep doing.  I'll ask my doctor these questions when I see her at my first ultrasound, but that isn't until November 30th.  So I'm wondering if anyone of you have advice about what I can keep doing or have been former collegiate athletes that can offer advice in the meantime.

Re: Any runners?

  • I am more of a jogger, but I am going to continue until told otherwise and also add in a lot of walking. From what I've read as long as your body is used to it you should be OK. I have a friend that used to run marathons and she jogged through her 9 month of pregnancy (no idea how) but she was totally fine.

I just hate the way I feel when I don't work out so I got to figure out some alternatives as my belly grows :)

  • I echo what PP have said. As long a you've been running routinely before you can keep it up. I run 35 miles a week right now with no issues. I plan on keeping this up until I physically can't.

  • If you've been running consistently before pregnancy, it shouldn't be an issue to keep doing it. Watch your balance, though, especially in later months when you'll have a large belly to deal with.

I wouldn't call myself a hardcore runner by any means, but plan to alternate running and walking to make sure my heart rate doesn't become too elevated.

  • Yes to everything everyone else has said. EXCEPT - be very careful with lifting weights, especially squats & lunges. Your joints will get looser & you're more susceptible to injury. You can keep running as you did but I would be careful about lifting. If you work with a trainer, talk to them about it as many have worked with pregnant clients before & know what you can & shouldn't do.

I'm running a half marathon in Jan. I'll be about 13-14 wks along & have only been running intermittently. But I have a run/walk plan so I'm sure I'll be fine. Good luck!
