Toothpaste?

At target now, wondering if there are any restrictions on toothpaste ingredients while prego? I normally use sensodyne.

Re: Toothpaste?

  • No, there are no contraindications to toothpaste ingredients while pregnant. Even Prevident 5000 (a rx toothpaste with higher fluoride is pregnancy Category B).

If Sensodyne works for you, I would continue to use it.  It is more important than ever to maintain you dental health while pregnant.

  • i agree with PP, no problems with toothpaste. it is super important to maintain good oral health as gum disease can lead to preterm birth.

  • Already 3 dentist appointment since I been pregnant,(11 weeks)  and all that dentist won't do is give me fluoride rinses  at appointments and not to change anything. One thing you may want to do is use mouthwash ( i use non-alcoholic listerine) because gingivitis is more common when pregnant and bad breath.
  • It's always a good idea to avoid fluoride, pregnant or not.  You may want to also get a water filter for your home so you are not consuming it when drinking tap water.

    Nope, none at all.

A regular water filter will not remove fluoride.

This is nothing wrong with fluoridated tap water. Too much fluoride (just like too much of anything) is obviously bad but it's perfectly fine to keep drinking your water.

As long as you're not eating the toothpaste, you're fine. If you're super concerned talk to your doctor/midwife and your dentist.
