Two Under 2

1 week old baby and sick toddler

I just had a baby a week ago and  have been breastfeeding. My 2.5 year old son, just came down with a cold and I am terrified of my newborn catching it. Any tips on how to avoid this. My newborn is so tiny and I am worried about her getting sick. Any advice would be so appreciated. Thanks very much.

  • DD1 got sick when DD2 was about 6 wks old and I was terrified. First, it's great you're bf'ing, as LO will get the antibodies your body is producing. Try to minimize contact between your LO's. Wash your hands after touching LO1 and even change your clothes, if they sneeze on you or anything. And wash LO1's hands frequently as well. And try not to kiss LO2's hands or face. [I would kiss the top/back of DD2's head instead, when DD1 was sick. It's hard not to kiss your baby]! :]

  • I dealt with this and unfortunately my newborn got sick, had a fever and then was admitted into the hospital. Not fun. Try to keep the kiddos separated. Do you have anyone who can watch LO 1? Change your shirt all the time, like right before you pick up baby. Get some of those masks if you get sick. Check baby's temp often and call dr if there is a fever. Since baby is under 30 days, you may need to go to the hospital if baby runs a fever.. Good luck, I'm sorry that you are having to deal with this.
  • Wash your hands and change your shirt as much as possible. Try layering them and throw one off after helping your toddler.

    Good luck. It'll get better!
