Sick DD... help

Thurs Evening: Fever (101.4), gave Tylenol, went to sleep at 7

Fri: Still fever (100-101), threw up twice, slept ALL DAY. She woke up 3 times for a few minutes and I tried to give her some water/milk/puree. She maybe ate less than 1oz of food and drank 1-2oz of fluids. No Tylenol during the day.

Fri Evening: Still fever (100), gave Tylenol, slept the entire night

Sat Morning: Still temp (99). She is at least staying awake a little longer, but still refusing to eat or drink. She has dry lips and definitely not as wet as a diaper as she normally would have overnight.

So...

1. How do I get her to drink fluids? I did BF her last night and this morning, but we've weaned from bottles and BF during the day for a month now. I know she does not get that much from BF anymore. We will pick up some Pedialyte today, but not sure how to get her to drink it.

2. Should I continue to give Tylenol? I know a slight fever is helping and I shouldn't give Tylenol every time she has a temp, but it is going on for a couple of days now.

3. What else can I do to help her? =(

I did call the pedi and he said that as long as her temp does not go over 103, to just keep her hydrated. If she still has a temp by Monday, bring her in. Basically, wait it out. Ugh.

Re: Sick DD... help

  • I'm sorry your little pumpkin is sick! It's so sad. Sad

    1) Does she have a favorite cup, or if she likes new things, is there a new kind of sippy cup/straw cup she might be interested in? Maybe the novelty would get her to drink a couple of ounces. Does she like watermelon or cucumber?

    2) Hmm...since her temp is down a bit, I might wait on the Tylenol and see if it stays in the 90s without meds. If it starts climbing again I'd probably give Tylenol and call the pedi again (I'm assuming they have someone on call). If her temp stays stable or keeps declining, I'd probably hold off on the Tylenol.

    3) Snuggles. I hope she feels better really soon!

. This! My older one loves those thigs! I would also wait out the Tylenol unles the fever is higher.

  • I agree on the popsicles and watermelon.  I also think if giving her tylenol will make her feel a little better by getting the fever down, then I personally would do it, because she might be more likely to drink etc. if she's feeling a little better.  Good luck mama - a sick baby is so hard... :(
