Cloth Diapering

What did I do wrong?

I am getting really bad ammonia issues.  I recently tried stripping with RLR.  I started with clean diapers, then a whitest whites cycle with the RLR, and a few extra rinses in my HE FL.  It didn't seem like I really needed the extra rinses since I didn't see any bubbles but I did more just in case.  The strip didn't help most of the diapers and still had the strong ammonia smell.

I now have to do another strip after my well-intending SIL washed a few of the diapers in non-CD safe detergent.  How should I go about stripping them, both to wash out that detergent and to get rid of the ammonia smell?

Please help!  I don't want my baby to be the stinky one!  : (

  • I think blue Dawn does a better job than RLR.

  • I found that boiling my diapers in vinegar water helps with that.  I also use vinegar in my last rinse cycle.  I haven't had ammonia problems since I started this.

What kind of detergent? I would think one wash wouldn't require a stripping, it should come out with your regular washes. Your diapers are probably not clean enough. If you weren't getting suds then you probably didn't have buildup, and you don't need to strip. What is your routine? I had to switch to tide bc my soap nuts couldn't get my super absorbant nighttime dipes clean. If you don't get all the pee out you'll get ammonia.

She did a wash in Melaluca detergent.  I figured I would just do another strip since it didn't really work all that well the first time around anyway.

My current routine is a quick wash (warm water, no spin, no detergent), whitest whites cycle w/ detergent (about 1TB of Country Save), followed by an extra rinse.  I keep seeing all the suggestions for Tide; I should probably just give it a try.

     Thanks for the suggestions ladies.
