Once Upon a Child

Anyone sell used baby gear to them? We've decided we're done with babies and I'm trying to figure out what to do with all of the gear (bouncer, high chair, swing etc). The closest OUaC is about 40 minutes from us, not sure if it would even be worth the drive. All of the gear is very clean and in great condition (some has never even been used!)

You'll have better luck with Craig's List.

Once Upon a Child gives you almost nothing for your items, I think people do it because it's less of a hassle than selling it yourself.

This. If you don't want to deal with a garage sale/Craig's List, bring all your stuff there and they'll have cash for you within an hour. I do it every once in a while. They explain their calculations for why they're offering what they're offering--they obviously have to make a profit, so don't give you half of what you might get selling things yourself.

  • I've sold things there, and it was kind of nice to just take the stuff in and be done with it, although they only took a quarter of what we took in. I sold my swing for about $20.

One of the negatives of selling things on Craigslist or at a garage sale is that people constantly try to get things for practically nothing. Even if you price it at a dollar, they'll try to talk you down.

Personally, I'd say take it all to OUAC, sell what you can and then have a garage sale for the rest.

  • I have not dealt with Once upon a Child but have sold stuff to Children's Orchard. I have never used Craigslist. I take my stuff to CO and then what they don't take I put in a garage sale or donate.

The last time I sold stuff to CO, I took 2 large rubbermaid tubs of clothes, 1 small tub of shoes and a small box of books and puzzles. They took all of the books, puzzles, and shoes, and probably 2/3 of the clothes and gave me $200.

  • Are there consignment sales in your area?   Near us, they have some huge twice yearly sales that draw lots and lots of customers.  The nice part is that if you volunteer, you earn 75% of your asking price which is FAR more than going to a regular consignment store.  It takes some time to enter the prices and print tags for your things...but I've made back lots of money doing this and it's easier than craigslist and trying to meet up with random people.  Good luck!

  • It will not be worth the gas to do that.  I have one near me and my husband sold a gate that we barely used and paid $100 for, he got like $10, if that.  Not worth the trip
  • In my opinion Once Upon A Child is cheap, They don't pay near enough even when the merchandise is nice. To me it wouldn't be worth the 40 minute drive, you would make more money selling it outright on Craigslist or something.

    I agree 100%

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone! I think I'l go the CL route and see how it goes.

  • I am not a fan of OUAC.I think they charge too much for used, and don't pay enough when selling. In Nebraska we have a BIG WHEELS TO BUTTERFLYS. They pay so much better.

  • The only time I sell things to them is when its a bunch of clothes that I don't feel like having craigslist people pick through, because honestly, $3 for an outfit isn't worth the time and hassle, so I take large tubs of clothing there, and then use the money they give me to buy the size B is currently in since they often (at least ours does) have a lot of name brand super cute stuff. I wouldn't take gear there, because you can get a lot more for it on craigslist. I've sold things on craigslist for like 3/4 of what I paid for them new when they were clean and still good and made most of the money back that we spent.
