My FIL is coming over for dinner tonight. My MIL is out of town all week so we thought it'd be nice for him to invite him over. I'm making tacos/taco salad, his favorite. DH says his dad loves refried beans but we never eat them. DH and I don't really care for them. So I have no idea what to do with them. I don't want a complicated homemade recipe. I'd like to just get a can of refried beans from the store today and... I don't know, do something with them. I guess I have two questions: 1) are canned refried beans gross? and 2) if they are not gross, what is something easy I can do with them? Do I just dump them in a bowl and nuke it? If canned refried beans are gross, I'll just skip them. I just thought I'd give it a shot since my FIL seems to like them a lot. TIA!!
Re: What to do with refried beans?
We use them a lot and usually find the generic canned beans to be fine. You can heat them up on the stove or in the microwave. If you heat them in the microwave, cover them so they don't make a mess.
btw, if you end up with leftovers, you can make a great dip by mixing it with salsa and melted cheese.
Yum! Big refried bean fan here... homemade and canned are both fine. Just heat on the stove, then dump into a bowl and smooth out the top so it looks decent.
Now I want tacos...
Pretty much what everyone else has said. We also do tostadas a lot rather than just tacos and spread a thin layer on the bottom. I LOVE them and will do them with a little cheese on the stove as a side to tacos and usually with rice as the other side. H doesn't care for them too much but will happily eat them in tacos or tostadas.
Oh also, Ditto the dip. I made an awesome taco like dip that we both liked a few months back.
