TTC after 35

Introduction (struggling, bad day)

Warning: mention of MC ahead

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to join your community so wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and say hi. I'm 35 (hoping 35 and a few months is enough to qualify me for this board :) ) and my fiance and I have been trying to conceive for about 10 months.

We got very lucky and I got pregnant immediately during our first month of trying back in  February of this year. Unfortunately, that pregnancy ended in a missed miscarriage.  The doctor thinks the pregnancy ended around 6 weeks, but it was not discovered until the 7-8 week. I waited for 2.5 weeks to miscarry naturally (a very, very dark time), but ultimately had to have a manual vacuum aspiration. After the procedure it took months for my period to return and we've been trying again since July with no luck.

(TMI ahead) My cycles have always been like clockwork, no spotting, every 28 days, until recently, that is. Now all the sudden, the last three months I've been spotting with dark brown string discharge exactly one week before my period is due and spot right through until my period starts right on time. We've ruled out fibroids, cysts, polyps, etc, via ultrasound so my gynecologist is leaning towards luteal phase defect (but why now? this never ever happened before a few months ago!). I'm seeing a RE next week to talk about more tests and solutions. There is also a small chance I'm dealing with endo. Not sure. It seems strange to me that all this started after the MC and after the procedure and I never had anything like it before.

Today's been a particularly rough day because it is my original due date. I was supposed to be holding my baby today, but instead I had to go get a transvaginal ultrasound. I kind of fell apart in the stirrups because it took me back to the day when I found out the pregnancy was not viable and, given the significance of the day, it was all too overwhelming. Blah. The nurse probably thinks I am a nut. It was probably not the best scheduling on my part.  :/

I'm also generally having that panicked "omg, I've waited too long" fear that I'm sure many of you know of and all this testing is making me feel a hundred years old, scared, frustrated, and totally depressed. I'm trying to stay positive, but I'm not doing the best job.

So, anyway, that is all about me (probably TMI, actually). Thanks for reading! I look forward to getting to know you guys.

Mandy

  • Welcome, and sorry for your loss. It's a good idea to see an RE, as you're about to do ... they tend to know a lot more about TTC than ob/gyns, though it does sound like your gyno has a clue. Good luck.

  • Welcome to the board.

You have a lot going on right now. It would make anyone feel panicky, no matter their age. It's quite possible you're just fine and 35 isn't really that old. The RE will show you graphs about how much younger and more fertile you are from 35-37 than 38-40 or older :-)

I'm sorry for your loss. Take care of yourself.

Thanks so much, Annalise! I welcome any charts that make me feel relatively young. This process is making me feel ancient at the ripe old age of 35.
