s/o Costco

A Costco opens up here in Knoxville today. THANK GOD.

I have been suffering at the hands of Sam's Club, who in their infinite wisdom, do NOT accept Visa Credit (but they will accept Visa Debit). WTF?! So if I want to buy something there and put it on one of my awesome reward visa cards and pay it off from my checking out.. I have to take my ass to Walmart, buy the amount in gift cards, and then go pay for it in gift cards at Sams. Just to get some sweet rewards.

Thing is... I have never been to a Costco.

So.. Sam's Club vs Costco. Go.

  • Our Costco only takes American Express, or cash or check of course.

Costco, hands down.  Although both make me stabby.

Have you ventured to Trader Joe's yet?  My mom was super excited since she fell in love with my local one.

    Yes! It is awesome!

But TN State law doesn't allow wine to be sold in Grocery Stores (but beer is A-OK!) so... the awesome cheap Trader Joe Wine- they don't sell it. So we still go to the one in Atlanta when we drive down to IKEA. Just for the cheap boxes of wine.

I love living in the Bible Belt.

Thou shall not buy thy wine in a grocery store but beer is okay!

Thou shall not buy thy alcohol on Sundays in many counties. Or at all in other counties.

    Big freakin eyeroll.

This isn't even a contest.  Costco!  Always Costco.  That's my second happy place, after Target.

You have convinced me because I love Target.

You couldn't buy beer in my county until recently.  And they just passed the ability to serve liquor at all.  Scandal.

Kroger is really lobbying for wine in grocery stores.  If it makes you feel better, they can't buy wine in grocery stores in MD either.  And I don't count them as really Southern or Bible Belt.

It is incredibly ridiculous and pisses me off to no end. If someone doesn't want to buy their wine in a grocery store or drink on Sundays- then that is their prerogative. That doesn't mean everyone prescribes to their flavor of moral code.

Is it a tax thing or what? I seriously need to know. Is it some Liquor Store Lobby preventing it so that they force people to come to their store to get their wine?

  • People can't buy wine at the grocery store??? I am so sheltered. I had no idea basic human rights were being circumvented like this. Those affected by this have my deepest sympathy.

    Also, Costco is awesome.

  • They don't take credit cards because they charge a merchant fee somewhere between 3 and 5 percent. Amex charges the most, so some stores don't take it. It's annoying, but that's how it goes.

BJ's club allows most cards, but we don't have one since we moved.

  • I'm Canadian so things are a bit different here considering we don't have Sam's club, but I shop Costco all the time.  Here they take AMEX, debit & cash only so your Visa problem probably won't be solved anyway.  And here liquor is sold in liquor stores only.  Grocery stores can sell n/a beer and wine making kits but not the actual stuff.  So even Costco has to have it's own liquor store here, but I have no idea whether that is a Canada wide thing or just provincial.
