mamaroo...hype or must have?

A friend if mine had a baby 3 weeks ago. When I asked her what must haves I should have on my registry she mentioned the mama roo. https://www.4moms.com/mamaroo

She said it takes up less space than a swing and is comparable in.price when using a coupon from bbb or Bru.

I would love to get some other opinions.

  • I have it on my list!

  • I babysat a little boy who had one, and they are pretty cool, but I wouldn't buy one. I just would get a bouncer, mostly it's a price thing.  If they were cheaper I'd get one.

  • My son loves it.  I must say that initially we had a fisher price swing that stopped working after 6 weeks of use.  We read reviews on amazon before putting it on our registry and it got glowing reviews.  When he starting having issues with it we searched the fisher price website and the reviews weren't too stellar.

  • With what I have heard both on here about it as well as website reviews, it's small. Very small, like baby grows out of it WAY too quick small. And pricy - I've seen them for $200+! You can get a nice bouncer seat for $60 or so.

  • neither. my LO loved it when he was a newborn and graduated to the swing by about 3ish months. it wasn't a must have, but i was grateful that i had it. that said, if i had to pick one, i'd pick the snugabunny swing over the mamaroo.

  • I was really excited about the Mamaroo when I was PG with DD. It had just come out and had pretty good reviews. I got the Mamaroo and didn't get a swing or a bouncer....BIG mistake lol.

DD hated the Mamaroo....I really tried for her to like it. I would lay her in it awake, I would rock her to sleep and then put her in it. It really didn't matter...as soon as she realized she was in it she would scream bloody murder lol. So I went out and got the Fisher Price lamb swing and she loooooved it.

I hope DD #2 ends up liking the Mamaroo because if not it means it was a total waste!

  • I wouldn't get it. I saw them and wanted one sooo badly at first because I didn't want a bulky swing. Luckily I had a friend who gave birth before me and she got one for her DD (who hated it) and I borrowed it for my DD and she couldn't stand it either. It was way too slow for her. I finally broke down and bought a regular swing and DD loved it (but only on the highest setting). The Mamaroo just didn't move enough to calm her if she was upset and she'd get impatient in it as if she was waiting for something to happen.

I will say that one of our best purchases was the baby bjorn bouncer. It is very pricey for a bouncer but 100% worth it. It doesn't vibrate like a typical bouncer (DD had one of those as well that we got at a baby shower and it was ok but dhe loved the baby bjorn so much more). You have to manually bounce it but it bounces so smoothly and baby can use it much longer. DD would sit in it as a chair even up to 9 months and just play with the toy bar. She could probably still fit in it now! No matter how upset she was when she was little, if I bounced her in that she immediately got happy. I would bounce her with my foot while I at or worked on the computer, etc.

  • Anyone reviewing it with a model that came before mid 2012, is not reviewing the current model. Make sure it's the 2012 that people tell you about. It's better and faster.
  • We had one and returned it. Liked the regular swing better, especially for the price.

  • I don't know anyone whose babies liked it, and several had it. I would skip.

  • We have it and we loved it, many long nights were saved by it.  With that said, it's just like a swing or a bouncer where it's hit or miss depending on your baby.

It's as "must have" as a swing or a bouncer, and like pp mentioned, the newer models move a little faster than the older ones (I have the 2010 model I think).  Anyway, it worked really well for us, and we used it for a long time with our 1st, she didn't grow out of it quickly or anything.  When she started daycare at 3 months, we found she always really likes a swing.  Good luck :)

  • Like everyone else has said, it's hit or miss depending on your baby. I did want to add that we got ours from a local consignment shop for less than half the regular cost and ended up spending around the same as we would have for a regular swing/bouncer. DS loves his mamaroo so we never ended up buying a swing for him.
