Dentist..

This is something I've put off pre pregnancy, but something I've heard is especially important for pregnant women.

Can you/ or do they not xray your head/ mouth when you are pregnant?

I hate that part anyway but would be okay with just a cleaning if I can get away with that simple of a visit.

Thanks for the input!

Re: Dentist..

  • I got a cleaning when pg with DD and it was fine.  I'm getting one next week too.  No xrays.

  • When you go in for a cleaning just tell them that you're pregnant and they won't do the x-rays. You're right, though, it is very important to have cleanings while you're pregnant. My insurance actually pays for a third cleaning )so every 4 months instead of 6) in any calendar year you're pregnant.

  • My doctor said no x-rays or laughing gas while pregnant. Novocaine is okay, though, if they need to do a filling.

They usually just double drape you. It's super important to get your teeth cleaned during pregnancy (and all other times)

  • I am a dental professional :)

cleanings are a must as your oral health has a direct connection to the rest of your body.

As far as X-rays, if the X-rays a digital, go ahead you and baby are absolutely safe.  The beam is directed to your mouth and will have very minimal residual radiation.  To reassure you, on of my dental instructors accidentally had the X-ray tube head pointed directly at her belly while pregnant and her daughter is a completely healthy college student now.

    Hope this helps! :)

Oh man, the digitals are safe! Those were too big for my mouth and were extremely painful, and one of the reasons I haven't wanted to go back.
