anyone else starving at 12 weeks??

i'm 12 weeks pregnant and in the last week or so i started getting really hungry. i mean wake up in the middle of the night, can't go back to sleep, dream of breakfast HUNGRY. anyone else experiencing this yet? i hear that ravenous hunger starts around week 14 or 16, so don't know why mine is starting so early. i already put on 6 lbs, so i am trying really hard to watch what i eat and make good choices. and now that my ms has subsided and actually have some energy, i started walking 30 min every day again. but i'm having a hard time finding satisfying snacks/foods to keep hunger in check, especially at night. a banana sometimes works, but last night at midnight i actually had to get up make myself a sandwich, i was so hungry. i'm worried about gaining too much weight so what are some healthy, yet satisfying snacks you found?? nuts, yogurt, fruit don't really cut it. i mean they work for 30-45 min and then i'm hungry again. thanks!!

  • I am the same way and it started early for me as well. I usually wake up at 4:30 in the morning and can't go back to sleep if I eat something. I like greek yogurt, an english muffin with laughing cow cream cheese, or some egg whites with cheese. The english muffin with cheese is my new favorite. You seriously need to try it!!

  • when i was pregnant with DD i was starving from day 1.  i thought something was seriously wrong with me because i kept getting negatives on pregnancy tests.  I continued to have to eat 6 meals a day and 1 midnight snack fro 9 months.  I don't miss that at all

  • I am 13 weeks and I have days like this mixed with days of ms where I can't eat anything.  I try not to question it and am just happy I get good food down on those days.  Lean proteins should help, one night when I was feeling like this I had a half a soy chicken sandwich.  (I am vegan, but real grilled chicken would work just as well).  I just had one slice of whole grain bread with three pieces of soy chicken and some spinach and mustard and it kept me full all night.  The soy chicken pieces are small, so it was likely the amount of 1/2 a chicken breast.  Since it was only half I don't think it was too much really for a night snack.  Or peanut butter on some crackers?

  • PPs are right:  mixing some protein (digests slowly) with a whole grain (or other high-fiber choice, like fruit or veg) and a little bit of healthy fat (sends the brain a chemical message to create satiety) is the best answer.

    Some ideas:

Egg or egg whites (or some chicken) and avocado on whole wheat bread

Hummus, olives, vegetables, and whole wheat pita

Cottage cheese or greek yogurt (not non-fat) mixed with high-fiber cereal, almonds, and fruit

Homemade fruit-nut granola bar (like these!)

Whole-wheat pasta salad tossed with lots of fresh veggies, feta cheese, and vinaigrette

Hard boiled egg, cheese stick, and half an apple (works on-the-go)

Low-fat chocolate milk & half a peanut-butter and banana sandwich on whole wheat

  • I was starving from around week 8 all through my second tri.  Now I am getting full faster (no more room in there!) but it was crazy how hungry I was all the time.  I figured it was my body telling me to eat so I tried to make decent choices and stay active.
