Fitting two car seats in the car

I have a toyota corolla, and as it is now I have DS in a convertible seat on the passenger side, rear-facing.  The only way to fit it is to pull the front seat all the way up, and DH and I are relatively tall/long-legged, so whoever sits up there is totally crushed (truth be told, DH can't even fit, so it's always me being crushed, unless I'm driving).

We had to do the same thing with our infant car seat before we switched to convertible, so I'm wondering what will happen when baby #2 arrives.  We still have our car seat and had planned to use it, but I'm pretty sure I won't be able to drive if I need to be any closer to the wheel.

What has worked for you?  I'm trying to avoid switching DS to front-facing for as long as possible, even though he's very tall and big for his age.

Re: Fitting two car seats in the car

  • I don't know how the Corolla compares size wise, but we drive a VW Jetta and until last week had both girls RFing. DD1 was behind the driver in an Evenflo Triumph 65 and DD2 was behind the passenger in a Graco SnugRide 32..Convertible seats, when used for older RFing toddlers, can be at a slightly more upright angle than when used for infants, giving a little more space. Plus we found that the convertible seat was smaller front to back than the infant seat, which is why that one is behind the driver.

  • We bought a new car (Subaru Outback) to solve this problem.  :)  It has more space between the front and back seats so my DH is able to drive it pretty comfortably with the infant seat behind him and convertible on the passenger side.

Maybe see if there's a different convertible seat you could buy that would allow you to put the driver's seat back further?  Some are smaller than others and might not block the front seat as much depending on their shape.

  • I also have a Corolla with DS in a rear facing convertible seat. I plan to have the 2 seats side by side so that one is in the middle seat and the other behind the passenger seat. We will have more of a problem when there are 2 convertible seats since they are bulkier and may not fit side by side. We will see when we get to that point.

  • I have a corolla.. DS is in his convertible seat RFing in the middle of the backseat (I feel like it's safer if someone hits either side of our car). With this next LO I will put them on either side as it's easier to snap the carseat in and out if it's on the outside. It'll probably go behind the drivers seat as I am short and have it almost all the way forward anyway. Anyway, neither way will impact the passenger seat. Works for us!

  • I'm confused, does the corolla have 6 latches?

I have a Camry and we cannot put a seat in the middle and on either side. There are only 4 latches under the seats. So I have one seat on either side.

  • I used to drive a Chevy Malibu and after DS was born we bought a Ford Expedition. We knew we would have more kids & his infant carseat would hit the front seats in the car. Now we have a whole extra row to fill up, haha.
