I'm not getting DS his own cake, he got that at his one year old pictures a week ago and I don't want to deal with the mess again! haha.
I am making 2 cakes though:
The decorated cake is a white box cake, but on pinterest I saw "how to make a box cake taste like it's from a bakery" and what you do is: add 1 additional egg, use melted butter instead of oil and double the amount, and use milk instead of water. I did a test run a couple weeks ago, and it's pretty good. Then I'm making frosting and it's 16oz cool whip mixed with a box of vanilla pudding mix. it's so good!
I am also making cookies n cream cupcakes with oreos in them. Made them about a year ago and they're soo good too.
Saturday is cake day. We're doing a cake smash in the morning and a small birthday GTG in the evening. Cake smash cake is vanilla, vanilla, vanilla (vanilla cake, vanilla buttercream, vanilla filling). Party cake is vanilla cake, vanilla buttercream and a cookies and cream filling.

Haven't decided the flavor yet. I do know that DS will have his own smash cake. I'll make an oversized cupcake (baked in a ramekin). It's a great size because it's bigger than a cupcake so you can decorate it nice but it's smaller than most of the cake pans you find so it's not an overwhelming amount of cake for a baby.
Haven't decided on a flavor at all yet, I'm hoping to do a couple trial runs this weekend to figure it out. I'm going to make cupcakes and the frosting from scratch, it's been a long time since I have made a cake and I've never really done frosting so I'm going to practice. I think I'm going to get one of those giant cupcake molds for DD's smash cake, and then regualr cupcakes for everyone else.

We did vanilla cupcakes. I gave him one and watched him go! The bakeries here do a small first birthday cake with a larger one on the side or you can buy the small birthday cake with cupcakes on the side. It depends on what you plan on doing. We just do family until they are about five.
it's tradition to order special cakes from a local bakery. for ds, that means a chocolate ganache monkey cake (monkey is holding a big banana, sooooo cute). they are expensive and wonderful and i will continue to do this until my children tell me to stop:)
I think we are going to get a sheet cake from the local bakery, vanilla with pink flowers. They make "birthday cake cupcakes" or extra fancy ones that look like they would work... on the other hand I might get a cake mix and make one for LO myself. Still undecided!
I'm making DD a sugar-free pumpkin/sweet potato/apple cake.
For guests I am not doing a cake I am making mini-cupcakes (chocolate, vanilla, and pumpkin spice), mini caramel apples, and mini-pies (chocolate and pumpkin)

Re: birthday cake?
For guests vanilla cake with strawberries and vanilla buttercream.
I figure he will get at most a few bites in him and the rest on him, the floor and everywhere else.
