Anyone have trouble with IUD removal?

I went in to see my regular doctor on Halloween for my annual exam and to have him remove my Mirena IUD. After I had my IUD placed I had to go back in to have the strings shortened. When i went back in for a checkup they said the strings were pretty far up now and could be hard to get out.

So fast forward to Halloween and the doctor cant find the strings. He tried for awhile. Fun!

So I had to get a referral to and OB/ GYN to have it removed. If this happened to you, what was the result? Do you think the OB/GYN will be able to get it out without me having to have surgery?

Re: Anyone have trouble with IUD removal?

  • After a lot of horrible side effects, I had my removed on Sept 25th after having it approx 2 years. I had my OB/GYN remove it, it took 4 different tools (forceps, i think?) to find the right size to open me up enough to find it. I took her a total of 45 minutes to find it. I also had my strings shortened. It had moved and was almost embedded in me. It hurt very bad to have it taken out (way worse than it being put in) it felt like it ripped something out with it. I had a "crash" afterwards and my dr said that my body was detoxing from the mirena.

I didnt bleed or cramp afterwards, I still have a sharp pain in the area they found it that feels like im being stabbed. I am going back to have that checked out.

I dont mean to scare you, but that was my experience. It wasnt good, but neither was my entire experience with the mirena. I hope it goes better for you but plan on the realistic expectation that it will be very uncomfortable and maybe painful.

Did you have bad side effects or weight gain?

  • I've had it since my daughter was 6 weeks old so I've had no bad side effects. I just want the damn thing out and I want to start trying for #2. Ugh!

  • I had the paraguard taken out with no problem during the actual removal, but now my period hasn't started for over a month. It is odd because it is supposed to be hormone free and shouldn't affect my period at all. And I'm not pregnant, so I don't know. I don't think I will get one next time, but they are so convenient. Good luck!
