kept baby clothing

Are any of you/have any of you kept clothing from your LO?

We are expecting again, but I am drowning in small boys clothes. How did you decide what to keep and what to ditch and how do you store all of this stuff?

Right now I have big Sterilite tubs that I'm stacking in the attic but my organization has gone out the window. Plus, now I'm trying to stash 12m winter and summer clothing and there is a lot of it! Also we didn't find out the sex with LO#1 and likely won't w/ LO#2 so what is the statue of limitations on keeping this stuff if LO#2 proves not to be a boy?

Thanks!

Re: kept baby clothing

  • I have DS's outgrown clothes in 3 large plastic bins. One is 0-6m, one is 6-12m (those are in the attic) and the last one I am still filling up. I've kept almost everything and only thrown out a couple things that were badly stained. And I threw out all of his bibs because they were just done. I assume we will bring it all back out whenever we get pg with #2 and get close to that baby's arrival.

  • We have kept it all still.  We are TTC, and so don't want to get rid of clothes.  I am storing stuff in Space Bags.  It seems to be working well, as they are smaller than tubs.  When we know we are done having boys, I intend to sell as much as I can at consignment sales/stores.  I do plan on keeping a few items, such as his going home outfit, though.

  • I have a ridiculous amount.  Right now it's in space saver bags under her crib and in her closet.  I probably should go through them and get rid of stuff but I know I won't.

  • I only keep my faviorites now. I hand most clothes down to my cousin's baby boy because I just don't have the room to store it.  I do have a tendancy to want to hold on to everything.  I mean I have about 30 newborn caps in a ziplock baggy from DS1's stay in the NICU...which we initially took so we could bring them home so the dogs could get used to his scent.

After DS1 I had 6 storage tubes filled with baby clothes.  Going through it to pick clothes out for DS2 I decided I didn't want to keep all of it hanging around anymore.

My DH thinks I'm crazy because I keep every card I get for mother's day birthdays etc...  I might have a slight hording problem.

  • Even though we are leaning toward being "one and done", I have still kept all of DD's clothes so far. We are going to wait a couple of years before we consider the idea of another child and I'm just afraid to get rid of everything in case we have a change of heart in a few years. I've considered consigning things, but you just don't get near what you paid for things brand new. So for right now, I have everything in 2 totes and I'm about to start filling up a 3rd.

  • We are almost certainly one and done, but I am keeping my favorite things right now - maybe a third of what we have. Max has worn some clothes that used to be his daddy's and I loe the idea of keeping a few things for any future grandkids. Everything elsewas boxed up to be given away. If we change our minds and need clothes, I'll hit the thrift store!

This is us too. Only I *may* have about 8 large garbage bags of clothes in the basement at the moment (and counting) Embarrassed. I have a slight baby shopping problem LOL

  • Gosh, I feel like we have so much! I received a ton of clothes at showers (not a lot of gifts, mostly clothes. Ha!) and also had a few hand me downs. DH said, "thank God we are having another girl b/c we can actually reuse all these clothes!" Embarrassed

I have boxes that are labeled 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 12m, 18m, holiday clothes (all holidays including accessories such as bibs, Halloween outfits, Christmas dresses, Easter bonnets, etc), swimsuits/summer hats/etc, and winter coats. Oh, and I saved all shoes in boxes too. I know it sounds like a lot, but not all the boxes are huge or anything. I am slightly OCD about knowing where everything is, and I'm thankful since this one is a girl too, it will be easier to find!

We are 90% sure we are done after this, but I will probably keep all the clothes since my siblings haven;t yet begun to have kids. I will sell some to consignments, give most for my sibs, and then keep special outfits.

  • We have bins labeled by size in our storage room.  Obviously our 2nd is a boy so we can't reuse any of it!  We're still not 100% sure we're done having kids, so until we are I'll be storing DS' clothes the same way.  Then I'll sell them to a consignment store.  Get some money back so I can buy more clothes for them.  :)

  • I've saved most of them in giant tupperwares. The really wornout stuff I just threw out, and the clothes that were still in good condition but I didn't really like were donated.

We know we're not done having kids so pretty much everything is being kept for now!

  • I've kept everything and put them in bins.  I just went through all of the bins last weekend to see what DS#2 would be able to wear.  I also separated out the things that were a bit more sentimental.  I'm hoping to have the drive to have a quilt made of his special clothing items.

I would say if your LO#2 isn't a boy and you don't plan on having anymore children then get rid of everything you don't want to keep.

  • We kept DS's clothes in the big tupperware type bins until DD was born. Just last month I went through a bunch of things and gave the boy clothing away to my friend who is playing the role of single mom for her nephew (custody). I gave her pretty much everything that I can't use for DD. DD's clothes will likely go for consignment or go to my friend who had a baby girl but I'm not sure if the seasons/sizes will match up since she is a p-nut and DD is more average in size.

I have kept DS's stuff for DD like coats, boots, some pjs and other shirts (Elmo, Phillies, etc) that she certainly can use. In fact she had some moose pjs on last night and looked darn cute.

I did keep a bin of things I can't part with. Coming home outfit for both, special pjs or cute items that i want to keep for them to see someday. I will likely thin it out some more but right now it's about a half of a bin and thats ok.

  • I keep a bin in the closet to toss clothes in as she outgrows them or the season changes and as that fills up, they get put into space saver bags. We borrowed most of her clothes from a cousin though so it doesn't add up to a whole lot. Right now I've got one space bag of girl size newborn through 6 month and another with 6 mo through 12mo. A third space bag is half full of neutral/boy clothes and then I've got a bin full of 12mo+ clothes in the closet that need packed away. I don't separate by season because we don't have that much. At this point I'm waiting to see what LO#2 is before I shuffle things around again. As I'm putting clothes into the space bags, if there's anything I didn't really like the first time around, it gets put aside to be donated. I figured if I didn't like it or use it the first time, I'm probably not going to in the future. Oh, and I just remembered I lent out a couple sacks of smaller clothes to a friend. We'll hang on to everything until we're done having kids, at least one more.

  • I saved everything with #1.   We were team green that time so as I packed stuff away, I sorted it by gender neutral 0-3, boy 0-3, gender neutral 3-6, boy 3-6.

We wound up finding out the sex the 2nd time around and did have another boy so it all got washed/reused.   If we had had a girl instead, I would have washed only the gender neutral stuff and given away the boy stuff after the baby was born(just in case the u/s was wrong).

This time around, I just threw everything in bins.   I just fill it up until it's stuffed and pack it away.    I labeled with approximate sizes.   I'm only planning on holding onto it for another few months while I wait for someone to have a boy...everyone I know is having girls!!!!   If no one has a boy, then I'm just going to donate it somewhere.
