Trying to Get Pregnant

Expired HPT?

Here is my dumb question of the day - and I promise not to DD. Anyone know what happens to pregnancy tests when they expire?

I have a few Wondfo ones left over and I think they expired last March. Googling basically told me to stop being cheap and buy new tests. Blah blah blah, yes, I know this.

But...I'm just curious if anyone knows what actually happens. Will they not work at all, show false positives, false negatives? Obviously if they just don't work or will show false positives, then I don't want to use them. If they have just become less sensitive, then I may not care and can continue to be cheap.

And FYI, I peed on one a month ago because I like to pee on things and it showed correctly that I was not pregnant. The control line showed up, so something in it is still working.

So anyone know the science behind HPTs?

Re: Expired HPT?

  • IDK what would happen if you use them, but since they're expired that's kinda like playing with fire. Nobody wants a false positive....get new tests.

  • I don't know the science behind them but I would just assume they wouldn't be considered reliable after the expiration date.

  • I would keep using them and just use a backup test if you suspect the results may be wrong in either direction.

  • I was using expired OPKs when we were TTA because it wasn't important.  I noticed they took a lot longer than the new ones I'm using now.

I have no idea about expired HPTs, but I wouldn't risk driving yourself crazy by using them!

  • I agree with PP.. its worth the few bucks to buy new ones to save yourself the heartache of an inaccurate test.

  • I am pretty sure they'd be more likely to give a false negative than magically produce dye that only interacts with HCG when there is none present.  I'd still use it as a back up, but obviously you need new ones either way.

  • From POAS.com:

"31. Can I use an expired test? No. The chemicals used in HPT's deteriorate after awhile and no longer function properly. This can cause a totally defective test no control line, a false positive, or a false negative. Your best bet is to use a newer one!"
