14mth old not walking

Hi ladies
I know all babies do things in their own time but my 14mth old has been doing the back breaking mummy hold my hands whilst i walk for ages but crystalline if i try and let go of one hand. He was 6 wks early so not sure if I should be taking that into consideration. Q is how long did it take for your babies to take those 1st independent steps? Is there anything else i can do to help? He does also use his walker. Thank you x

Re: 14mth old not walking

  • I would try to wean him off of having to hold your hands while he walks. Both my kids walked around 14-15 months. He'll get there!

  • My DS was almost 18 months before he started walking, he has always been a very cautious kid, and still is. 14 months is still pretty young.

  • My girlfriend's son was around 17 months before he started walking.  Now he is a happy, healthy 3 year old and he is always running around.  Try not to worry.           He will do it when he's ready.

  • Yes, you should be taking into consideration he was 6 weeks early. You should go by milestones based off your EDD. Regardless, a child not walking at 12.5 months or 14 months is totally average. The "norm" for walking is big--10-16 months--and even therapists don't get concerned until a child isn't walking at 18 months. He has plenty of time before you need to worry and you shouldn't do anything to help him along as he will figure it out when he is ready to do it.

  • Totally normal.  My 15 month old isn't walking yet either.  He honestly doesn't even want to try most of the time.  He's so happy on the ground!  Haha.  As long as he is developing normally in other areas, and his feet are not pointing inward or he seems like he might be in pain when he tries, it should be just fine.  Some kids don't start walking until they are 2!

  • Thanks everyone for the below, feel reasured and will just let him carry on doing his thing. He is doing great in all other areas and tares around the place on his hands and knees whilst destroying everything in his path he he love em.
  • The earliest of my sisters 5 kids that walk was 15 months...latest 22 months. All of them could stand up and walk around just fine way before that, but they always liked to be holding on to something. Some kids are just more cautious than others... :)

  • My son is 18 mos and not walking alone. However, he has a hypotonia which causes gross motor delay. If you have questions, talk to your peds. 18 mos is usually the threshold, but if there's an underlying issue, PT is critical. Do not compare to other kids!
