Toddlers: 24 Months+

Almost 2.5 waking up middle of night...

I have an almost 2.5 year old daughter, and a 10 week old daughter. The last few nights DD1 has been waking up middle of the night - not really upset, but just up sitting in bed. I will talk to her through the monitor and tell her to go back to sleep but she doesn't. The last coupel times I went in there, one time she had a dirty diaper so I chagned it, then laid her back down adn stayed there another couple minutes and left. She would go back to sleep until about 5 or 5:30am when she heard DD2 get up crying to eat. At that point I won't go back in her room unless she is upset. This mornign she just sat there on her bed quietly from 5:30am-7:15am when I went to get her. I hate that I am ignoring her however what else can I do?? I have talked to her about that its not time to get up yet, and I also worry she will be so tired at preschool.

Any ideas? I saw an app on the iphone for a toddler awake clock - changes color when its time to get up , it is only $.99 as opposed to the $30 clocks sold on Amazon, thinking I might try that. I just dont' know how to encourage her to go back to sleeping all night. and she and DD2 have rooms right next to each other, but we try to keep both doors closed and tend to DD2 right away to minimize crying as much as possible.

  • No idea.  DS got right around 2 1/2 though and sleep became crap (overnight wake ups, early morning wake ups, etc.).  Very recently things have improved, although the last few days the time change + a cold are really killing things again.  Basically, I'm not help, but wanted to commiserate with you :)

  • I would try the app. We have the Ok-to-Wake Owl ($25 on Amazon) and it has been good for DS. We've probably been using it since he was about 2 1/2. He didn't wake up in the middle of the night... he just got up way earlier than any of us needed him to.

  • I think a new baby is a big adjustment for everyone. Does she have a sound machine in her room? I'd try that to drown out all the outside noise and try the toddler clock.

I don't have kids who sttn early, so that I can't help with. DD1 wasn't ready to sttn until she turned 5. (It was like a magical switch even though we had spent years trying everything we could to help her sttn.) DD2 is still up at least once/night.
