Elf on the Shelf - what age to start?

I can't decide if DD is still too young to start this year or not, she just turned two last week. Has anyone had good luck with the elf for their 2 year old? Or should I wait one more year?

Re: Elf on the Shelf - what age to start?

  • I'm wanting to do this with DD but I think that I will wait until next year when DD will be closer to 4 and might understand it a bit more, and hopefully won't be afraid of the elf  Smile

  • I just bought one today. It recommends 3+. I'm not sure that DS would have understood it last year.

  • We started when they were a little under 2.  His name is "doodle" because that's about all they could say.  They didn't really get it that year, but did get it last year when they weren't quite 3.

  • Mine were like 28 months at xmas last yr and they enjoyed getting up & running around searching for him last year (though much of the time I had to remind them) but didn't get much beyond that.  I know they'll get it this year for sure.
  • Thanks ladies! I think I will get one to start this year but keep the shenanigans simple. Next year he/she can get more mischievous :)

  • We had ours out last year. DD was 20 months. Believe it or not she understood getting up and looking for him and seeing where he was each day. I don't think she understood the part about him keeping watch on her and reporting back to Santa. However, this year she is already talking about Santa and we keep reiterating the "you have to be a good girl" and "Santa is watching". I can see her little brain working to figure it out. I think she will really be excited about it this year and she is 2.5.
