Anyone have an ultrasound yet?

I'm exactly 5 weeks today and called my CNM because [TMI alert] I had slightly brown discharge today instead of being pretty clear like usual and they want me to come in for an ultrasound just in case to make sure everything is OK.  I don't have any real cramping, just a twinge or pain here and there- probably just stretching so I am not too worried about it.  I was just wondering if anyone had had an ultrasound yet and if you were able to see the heartbeat.  I still haven't had my blood tests with my midwife (scheduled Friday), but I have more m/s everyday so I think things are going well.  I know I am probably just being paranoid because it's my first, but I know once I see a heartbeat my fears will be much more under control.

Re: Anyone have an ultrasound yet?

  • 5 weeks is VERY early for an ultrasound. It is entirely possible that you won't see a heart beat. I am just telling you this so you don't freak out if you don't. That would be completely normal. They may just want to confirm that the pregnancy is in the uterus (that's what my u/s was when I went in during the 5 week time period). If your HCG has risen enough, you may see a heart beat, but again 5 weeks is extremely early, so please do not be alarmed if you don't see a heart beat at this ultrasound.

  • Yes, I had an u/s at 4 weeks.  By the date of my LMP, I would have been over 6 weeks, but I knew that I O'd late.  My OB wanted to do the u/s anyways, which only succeeded in freaking me out b/c we couldn't see much (which is typical for 4 weeks).  I have another u/s Thursday at 6 weeks.  From what I've read and have been told by other bumpies, I should see a gestational sac, fetal pole, and possibly a heartbeat.

At 5 weeks, I doubt you will see a heartbeat and that's totally normal.

  • I won't freak out if I don't.  I figured since tomorrow is just the start of week 6 it would be too early.  I was planning what they would just make sure it's implanted correctly and if we saw some slight movement indicating a heartbeat that would just be an awesome bonus!

I think you can see it with a transvaginal ultrasound some time in your sixth or seventh week. But I'm not completely sure...

I am having my first u/s tomorrow at 5wks6days, it would be so great to see a little heartbeat but I think it is too soon (although my HCG number were over 3,000 last week)

6-7 weeks. It depends upon your hcg levels too. My dr said you see a fetal pole at 5,000 and you wouldn't see a hb until after that. You just may see a HB tomorrow!

  • I had my first u/s yesterday during my initial (I was surprised they did one so early) and, despite my OB insisting that I wouldn't see anything, We saw the hb!! Very exciting but completely normal not to see one at this stage, according to her. Good luck during your appointment I hope you get to see that little flicker!! Smile
  • I had a ultrasound today at 5 weeks 5 days. We saw the sac and she said she could see the yok sac very very small (I couldn't see it) and no heart beat.  She said it was very early and scheduled me to go back in 2 weeks. Don't worry- I'm sure you are perfect!
  • With DS I saw his heartbeat at 5w 3d. It made it so real! I don't go until Dec 10 which is killing me because I want to see the baby!!

Good luck and I hope you see that little heart beat!
