Basia

My 6 y/o DS has a girl named Basia in his class. (Pronounced beige uh) Meeting her was the first time I've ever heard the name, and at first I turned my nose up to it and thought it was awful. But now that I've been around her more, it's really grown on me and I like it. We're def. not considreing it for our DD because it's not our style at all and our babe is named, but I thought I'd share it and see what ya'll think about it. Have you ever heard it before?

Re: Basia

  • Growing up in a Polish community, Basia ("Bah-sha") was not unique.  I think most used Barbara in school, but went by Basia at home and with friends.

  • I know a few women named Basia. I'm from an area that has a large Polish population, and all women are first generation and from very traditional Polish families.

  • At a glance I pronounced it Bah-sha.  It's NMS, but it looks like it's a real name.

  • Okay, I might be the only classics nerd here, but I read it as "kisses" in Latin and I would pronounce it BAH-zee-a.

  • That's crazy the corrent pronunciation is so different from how this little girls name is pronounced. Her name literally sounds just like beige uh.
