Is this offensive?

So my husband has a video production company. Currently, he makes a series of cooking videos - a handful of chefs, a couple of recipes each. It's for some marketing company in the States.

Anyways....the latest video is with pastrami something. They want the ingredients listed during the clip, and sent a script for this. So there's this list and it starts with 'pastrami - get from a good Jewish deli'.

Now...., is this weird or offensive? DH and I couldn't really say. I mean, does it matter? I know we have a 'European Deli' here. Are there 'Jewish Delis'? As in does the sign say 'Jewish deli'?

I am curious. Enlighten me.

  • Not offensive, Jewish deli is perfectly acceptable.

This. Jewish delis have fabulous corned beef, pastrami, knish, kneidach. A regular ole deli just doesn't compare.

  • I don't find it offensive. I tell people all of the time to get stuff from the German bakery. It tastes WAY better! There are a lot of times it matters where you buy ingredients.... Nothing wrong with being specific.

  • You already got your answer, but in some parts of the US, Jewish deli's are an institution. Man I could cutabitch for a hot pastrami on rye for lunch.

  • We got an email this morning. The legal department wants it to just say 'deli'.

Thanks for the input though, I appreciate it.

    That's a shame...  a person who goes to a non-Jewish deli won't get the same pastrami.  :)

Honestly, this makes me want a corned beef special on Jewish Rye.

Jewish might be considered offensive, but "kosher deli" should be acceptable.

  • I am confused as well. Especially because the chef in the video is Jewish himself and actually says 'Jewish Deli'.
I guess they try to cover every possibility.

However, not all Jewish deli's are Kosher...

That is true and I have been to many that serve pork products. The main difference between Asian market and Jewish deli is one refers to a group of people from a certain region of the world rather than their religion.  Since Kosher denotes a type of food rather than a religious group it could be acceptable to the legal department.

Eh, saying Jewish deli is the same as saying you are going to a Japanese/Chinese/Italian restaurant.

Exactly.  It's a religion, but it's also a culture and a type of food (kinda).
