Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Weaning from BFing ? 6-9 mos

Hello. My LO is only 8 months old, so I still have some time to prepare the whole weaning process. But, that is only 4 months away- and that isn't very far at all. Does anyone here have any weaning advice? I'm a bit nervous about it....

What about NIGHT weaning? How did that go? What'd you do? ..Thanks!

  • We did night weaning ( aside from when she was sick or really just needed comforted ) when she was 7ish months. It took more patience than anything. at night when she would wake up to eat, i'd either shorten her nursing sessions or else i would take more time trying to rock her to sleep.  i think it took maybe 2( ish) weeks till i was able to go in- pick her up- and put her back down within 10 minutes. now when she gets fussy i just go in and pat her back and sing and she puts herself back to sleep 8 x out of 10.

I'm not sure about all together weaning. I was told that when you do decide to switch to regular ( whole milk)  ( which you are supposed to wait till one for ) that you shoudl gradually put small amounts in with either breast milk or the formula.  I'm going to wait till after she is one and has her get well check up and then talk to our pedi. I'd love to still give her breast milk till she is two- but nursing is starting to feel weird, and she really is not as interested in it- so once she gives me the sign i'm not going to hold her to it!  but i dont pump well so ... heres to hoping!

  • I weaned at 6 mo. My plan was to replace 1 feeding with a bottle per week, allowing my milk to adjust. But what I found was I was able to omit feedings sometime earlier. I went on how full I felt and what was best. I found I was fullest in the mornings (DS only had 1-2 feeding at night). So I cut out the 3rd feeding 1st and went from there. Sometimes only going a few days until cutting another feeding out. My plan was to keep morning and evening feedings for a while. I got to that point (morning, evening, and 1 sometimes 2 night feedings). Next I decided to cut out night feedings... we had done a version of ferber sleep training prior and so I let DS fuss out 1st night feeding...he fussed for 10 min and slept the rest of the night.... next night he fussed 5 min and then nothing!) I was SO FULL in the morning! I fed him usual morning feeding and pumped only if necessary. I ended up being kind of empty in the evening and cut that out next. DS cut out AM feeding on his own. Go on how you feel. Cut out the feedings when you are the least full 1st and go from there. Good luck.... it was easier then I thought it would be.
