How often?

How often should I be working out my arms? I didn't work on them consistently before I got pregnant and have a case of Jello-arms. I have the green light from my OB to exercise, including weight training. I want to make sure I am able to lift my baby by the time he or she is born, ha. Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: How often?

  • I try to work them 2-3 times a week, but I don't go crazy on them any day.  I know when my H goes to the gym for arms he does arms for like 45 minutes, I do cardio for about 45 and 15 minutes of arms.  I have no basis for this, it is just what I do.  Your baby will help you build them up!

  • I do a Jillian video DVD 3-4 days a  week, so those are my weight days.
  • You can work them as often as you want, so long as you give your muscles 48 hours of recovery between workouts.  This means that if you worked biceps one day, shoulders the next, triceps the next... you could conceivably work them every single day.

However, with most of my clients (I'm a personal trainer)-- great tone and definition can be achieved working the muscles 2-3x/week. One oft-used split for working muscles every day looks like this:

Sunday:  Active rest (yoga, hiking, etc.)

    Monday: Chest, shoulders, triceps

    Tuesday:  Legs

    Wednesday, Back, biceps, abs

    Thursday:  Glutes

    Friday:  Chest, shoulders, triceps

    Saturday:  Back, biceps, abs
