Routines... 2 mos b/g twins

When did you start a more rigid routine that was followed strictly with your twins? Ours are 2 mos old and we dont have a routine since they eat and sleep so erratically right now. They still eat every 3-4 hrs unless they are sleeping in longer stretches which sometimes happens, and we don't wake them up to eat.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Routines... 2 mos b/g twins

  • I think it wasn't until around 4 months when we got into a routine with naps and followed more of a eat, play and nap schedule.  They were taking three naps a day at that point but still falling asleep sometimes when they would "play".  We always would feed every three hours.  Just give it more time but it sounds like you are on the right track!

  • A routine began to appear around 4 mos for us as well.  We aren't real strict as far as times go for feeding, napping, etc.  I let their wake up time dictate the rest of the day, which has been working since they usually wake up between 6-6:30am everyday.  They eat every 2.5 hours & will "play" for about 1 hour after eating.

For the last month, naps have been a battle.  They only want to sleep on me.  But for the past few days, they have been able to sleep in their crib for their morning nap.  The rest of the day is a crap shoot.

I remember being frustrated & overwhelmed when they were 2 mos. old.  While they were becoming easier to manage (I had no help), I was anxious for a routine to start.  I kind of tried, but it didn't work, or maybe I gave up too quickly.  Anyways, I'm happy now.  Good luck!

  • Our are two months now and I am following an eat, play, sleep schedule.  They don't always make it through 'play time' without falling asleep but they do manage to stay awake for thirty minutes after eating usually and then they go down for naps.  About once a day they stay up for an hour to an hour and a half after eating.

I keep them on a 3 hr feeding schedule during the day.  Their last feeding is at nine pm and then they go down for the evening after being held upright for at least 20 minutes (we have reflux).  They are down for the evening by 10:00 PM and don't usually eat again until 6:00 AM.  Our boy sleeps through the night 90% of the time, but our girl usually has to be soothed a few times throughout the night.

FWIW I do wake mine throughout the day in order to eat on the three hour schedule.  I found if I did not do this, that they would get up for two more feedings during the night.

My twins are 3 months and we have a similar situation. They eat every 3 hours and will have awake time (including feeding) for between 60-75 min and then nap between 1.5 and 2 hours (ideally anyways!). It wasn't until they were about 11-12 weeks or so that we got this routine going because before that they ate more frequently and weren't doing much besides eating and sleeping and having a few moments of good humor in between!

  • By 2-3 weeks old, we had set times for them to eat, because they'd shown the pattern of going 3.5 hours between feeds. Naptimes were set based on average awake times and we did an eat-play-sleep rotation. We always woke to eat during the day. It's not fun to be so rigid but, it paid off for us. My almost 2 year olds ask to take naps because they know the routine so well.
