Re: when to start shopping for baby

  • I basically said this same thing in the Black Friday post, but for me, it's way too early. It's a personal decision, of course, but right now my main concern is getting through first tri safely. There's tons of time to shop after that.

We haven't really thought about the timeline for this, actually, I just know it's not the right time yet for us. I'm pretty certain we'll be getting some small baby items from my parents at Christmas, but other than that we'll probably wait until we see what kinds of hand-me-down things we'll receive, and I would imagine I won't start planning the nursery until after we find out the sex, although we want to keep things fairly gender-neutral either way.

  • I had made a plan that as soon as I found out I was ordering some Carolina Panthers booties that I found online. That's the first and only shopping I've done so far. I'll probably wait a little while to buy anything else, honestly.

  • It's up to you, really.

Last time I waited until we were about 20 weeks before purchasing anything. I was afraid of buying a lot of baby gear and then losing the baby and having all this stuff lying around to remind me.

  • I will likely wait until 20 weeks to register and will likely buy stuff then. But, I have totally started a Pintrest page to track what I want!

Also, I am starting to save money. People sometimes say stock up on gift cards but I prefer to stock away savings! Then when I want to buy something I have the money!

  • With my 1st pregnancy, I didn't buy anything except diapers until after my shower at 36 weeks.  I bought diapers when ever I could combine high-value coupons with a sale.  I ended up diapering my son for his first year for around $200 total.  If you plan on using disposable diapers, it isn't the worst idea to stock up on them in advance if you can get them for a good deal.

  • This is my first too, so I'm excited to shop!

Thankfully this fun fabric I want to use isn't available to January so it'll make me wait.

But I want to start looking for furniture deals. :]
I'll have a hard time waiting for a shower! Hehe

  • We didn't do any shopping last time until about 26 weeks. The only reason we shopped that soon was to order the crib, which took 8 weeks to ship.   I think I waited until 36 weeks or so to do any shopping on my own.  I think most people tend to wait until their 20 week anatomy scan to start shopping.  But if your ready to shop, go for it!

  • It's a personal choice. I picked up little outfits here and there, but my major shopping was done after my shower. This time around we may start sooner since we won't be having a shower, but I still would want to know the sex first before making any big purchases. Like a PP said, I have a Pinterest board to keep me sane until I'm ready to buy!

  • I can't see myself doing anything specifically for this baby until I'm at least 24 weeks along.
  • I plan on waiting until we find out the sex before buying anything. But I do like the idea of stocking up on diapers when they're cheap. Smart idea!

  • I do not plan on buying anything until the first of the year, once im out of the 1st Tri. I want to make sure it is a viable pregnancy and I want to know the sex for clothes and stuff. Maybe in Dec I would be comfortable with getting diapers and soap and things like that. It's funny because the SO is so eager to buy stuff for the baby already , and im the one wanting to sit back and wait !

This exactly. This time around we have all the gear we need except a double stroller. I plan to switch DS into a twin bed in the spring. The baby will use his crib, chair, changing table and we will order a dresser after my anatomy scan.

  • I don't plan to buy anything until I'm out of 1st tri at the very earliest (more likely not until 20 weeks or so). There's plenty of time to buy baby stuff!

I started shopping before my bfp. I like taking advantage of coupons and I'm in the school of thought of thinking positive. I realize the risks right now, but it's not like I'm giving up. And worst case scenario, we'll adopt. In the end, I'm going to need some baby things and I remember all too well lsat time how quickly things creep up. And also know that some of my friends were stuck in bed and weren't able to get things like they planned.

  • I didn't really start buying stuff until I was around 6 months.  I was waiting to see what people would give me.  That didn't stop me from creating my registry really early!! I did buy a couple of clothing items, but nothing significant until much later.  It is up to you though.  I got a ton of stuff from baby showers and stuff that people gave me, so I didn't really need to buy a lot of stuff, just something to keep in mind.  The little suckers are expensive, so it is nice to spread out the upfront costs though.
