Anyone's LO Have A Reaction to MMR Vaccine?

Has anyone's LO had a reaction to the MMR vaccine?

DS woke up this morning with a very mild pinkish rash on his cheeks and on random spots on his trunk and arms.  He doesn't have a fever or seem sick otherwise.

I called the pedi and the nurse stopped me mid-sentance when I told her DS's age to ask whether he recently had the MMR vaccine.  He had it 10 days ago, and she said this is the prime time there's usually a reaction.  She said to watch it for a day or two and if it doesn't improve I can bring him in.

I'm actually concerned b/c I recently got a surprise BFP b/c I know some of these childhood rash diseases can be dangerous to pregnant women (rubella, fifth disease).

Re: Anyone's LO Have A Reaction to MMR Vaccine?

  • Would it be a reaction as in him contracting the virus or just a skin rash like a possible allergy or general reaction to something in the vaccine?

  • I didn't even think about it until you just posted this but Olivia has had a slight rash on her stomach and chest, just like red dots but nothing that seems to be bothering her.  I wonder if it isn't a reaction to it.  It only lasted a day so I haven't been concerned and it happened about 10 days after.

  • Yes. Totally normal, and appears about a week after the MMR vax. Should go away in a few days.

  • I posted just yesterday that my DS has been "off" since his shots. He developed the same rash that you're talking about. It lasted about 2 days. The MMR vaccine is a slow acting vaccine, so that's why the reaction was delayed.

As for the rash and your pregnancy, I was told to make sure pregnant women and newborns don't touch the rash. I know it's easier said than done, but can you keep a onesie or shirt on until the rash is gone? And just for peace of mind, it wouldn't hurt to discuss your concerns about your pregnancy and contact with the rash when you meet with your OB next.

  • B had this too, along with a fever.  My Dr seemed to think it was unrelated to the vaccine and there WAS an outbreak of roseolla at her daycare, so I couldn't be 100% sure of the cause.

From what I've read I guess it's a mild form of the M M or R basically b/c they give them the live vaccine.
