My OB and hospital are just not on the same page as me and DH. I am switching to Vanderbilt Midwives, but I'm 30 weeks and the first appointment available isn't until Dec 3! I'm due mid January. Am I crazy?
Not crazy at all! With my first pregnancy we switched at 26wks from an OB to a homebirth with a midwife. I am so glad we made the decision to switch. I definitely agree that there's nothing more important than doing what makes you the most comfortable.
Not crazy! I just posted recently how I think I'm switching after my 26 week appointment with my OB. I have an appointment with a midwife today
Were you able to speak with someone on the phone who could answer some of your questions and concerns? I was able to do that, and it put my mind at ease while I waited for my first appointment.
Nope, not crazy. I actually have a friend who switched from a planned hospital birth with an OB to a homebirth with a MW at 38 weeks. Good for you for trusting your instincts!
Not. at. all. It's SO important that you feel truly at ease with your practitioner, and if you're not in agreement with the approach, get out!
A lot of midwife practices, like mine, will have you follow up with one midwife as much as possible throughout the pregnancy to make sure your prenatal care is consistent and thorough, but then whoever's on call delivers you. That's pretty much because, they know what they're doing. I don't see how your situation would be any different in actuality.
I switched around the same time with my last birth. My friend switched from her OB to a homebirth MW at 39 weeks (had the baby at 41). As long as they are willing to take you on it's never too late.
i've been debating this too. I absolutely LOVE my OB, but from the beginning I kind of wanted to try out a birth center we have here..literally like 2 minutes away from the hospital. Bc I have always wanted to have a water birth and I could do it or at least attempt it there. My other reasons are bc I want to have the least interference as possible as long as the baby is fine (no epidural, delayed cord clamping, immediate breastfeeding, no bath, no eye ointment, vit k or hepatitis B vaccine, not laying on my back to push, no IV if possible) I feel like I have more of a chance of having the birth I want there and not the hospital....but I LOVE my OB that much...that I'm still going to him fpr now. I guess I'll talk to him about all that at my next appt and see if most of that can still happen at the hospital. My last birth was nothing like I thought it would be and this is my last baby, so I want to try again for the birth I invision

Re: Switching from OB to Midwife at 30 weeks?
No!
If you are having no complications you should definitely go with the provider you feel the most comfortable with.

Good luck!
