Is there a reason to use onsie's underneath clothing?

Just wondering. I used them with my DS and have a bunch for this LO but still don't know why I did or if they are necessary.

  • I did with DS because he was a Feb. baby in MN... BRRR!! We plan to do the same with this LO. I think if all of your shirts are onesies then you dont need to worry about a separate onsie underneath, but I know with DS if we had just had a t-shirt or something on, his belly would have been showing ALL the time.

  • I would think for warmth and comfort. In those first few weeks, especially, I would think a onsie would keep zippers/snaps from rubbing on the umbilical cord.

  • I never really did this as a regular practice, but I know some people who do.  Especially with winter babies it's nice to have an extra layer sometimes.  Also, if you have 2-piece outfits (which I try to avoid at first) it's nice to have the onesie underneath to keep baby warm when the top rides up and it kind of tends to help hold the shirt in place a little bit.

  • Our weather is all over the place. Rather than buy a bunch of fleece, it makes since to buy more lightweight items and layer as necessary during the winter months.

  • Agree with PPs....it gets COLD here in Western NY so we always used onesies in the winter with all the kids.  And expecially with the two piece outfits as mentioned above.  :-)

  • i used them all the time - DS was born in April and i used them under alll his clothes. they were great as layers.

then i got long sleeve ones as well to use under cute tshirts

  • DD was a May baby, but I had DD in a onsie a majority of the time.  I found it easier to hold her without her shirt coming up all the time.

Then in the winter it was more for a warmth issue.

  • I always seem to have an abundance of them!!! I think having winter LOs, the extra layer is nice to have like pp have said. I've always just used them like undershirts.

  • Great question and thanks for all the answers. We have been given a lot of short sleeve onsies as second hand clothing and I would like to use them but figured with a winter baby it might not work so well. I live the idea of a onsies under a jumper for that added layer or warmth for baby.

  • I never have but I'm in Texas so our winters are too brutal. I always make sure that my babies are dressed for the weather and then use a blanket on top for the cold. I also bought a car seat tent this time to use when out and about so I think that will be plenty.

  • extra warmth (Henry gets them in the colder months still too) and for little ones, the layer of protection from blowouts is nice to avoid stains on the cute clothes :)

  • We used the until DS was about 6 months old, but he was born in november so it was useful to keep him warm and his belly/back always covered (we used a lot of "regular" outfits, pants + sweater and such)

We also used onesies the following winter when was really cold and for the same reason; this year I have 3 or 4 just in case
