Help! Child won't sleep!

DD took close to an hour and a half to settle down and go to sleep tonight and finally went down at like 8:45. She woke up screaming at 10:30 and is sol wide awake and refuses to lay down. At first I thought she was teething and gave her tylenol. At 11:30 I switched off with MH who gave her milk and watched tv with her. Right now she's crawling around in the dark while I adjust to being awake. I nursed her for a bit and she still refuses to lay down. Who caffeinated my child when I wasn't looking? Holy crap. Any advice for getting her back to sleep? All our usual tricks are not working.

  • Alastair had one night like this when he started getting his molars. No real advice. I ended up laying down with him and the snuggles got him to sleep. It seems like laying down hurt his gums and he had this nearly nervous energy.

  • Welcome to the clubSad. DD has had a couple of nights like that lately. I think it has to do with the molars. Last night she went right down and is still sleeping now, but the night before we were up a good part of the night. I have been putting a futon mattress on her floor and laying in there with her. It worked until she got up while I was sleeping and got out some toys. A shape sorter in the face at 5am is no fun!
  • She was back up at 5:30 whiney as ever. Kind of glad mh will be home with her today!

  • I have been dealing with a cranky P as well.  He's been a nightmare!  Nothing makes him happy and he refuses to snuggle with me!  His gums are a mess and I'm thinking it's the molars too.  Good times!!

  • when this happens with DS i figure its teethign pain, give tylenol and he is comfortable and back to sleep in 15 min

  • This was us Saturday night. LBB went down at 7:30 and was up at 10:30 screaming his head off and refusing to go back to sleep. Tried tylenol, teething tablets, snuggles, reading, nothing could get him to calm down and go to sleep. He was shaking from fatigue and would literally fall over while walking around. We finally got him to sleep after 1 and he was a cranky mess yesterday.

  • I would skip the TV and letting her play with the phone next time. It stimulates them and will take longer for them to wind back down.
  • Other than teething, could it be an ear infection?  E has woken up screaming when that's been the problem before.
