car seat - newborn or toddler on outside?

DS is currently in a convertible, in the middle, rear facing.  Do we leave him there and install the car seat for the newborn next to him on the outside?  Is this the safest way?  Or vice versa?  It seems like whoever is in the middle will always be a little safer, right?

It depends on the carseat(s) and the car. The carseats' websites should have some info on them as to where they should be in your make/model.

We put newborn in middle and our 2 year old went to the side in DH's jeep.
My car won't fit 2 like that so they are both on the side.

Need more info, citychick is right. What vehicle and what make of car seats. Honestly, either page supercutebenz on gear or ask at car-seat.org. That's a fairly technical question a tech can answer.
