Question About Milk intro as well

First off sorry for the wallotxt and lack of punctuation, I am bumping from my phone. Also this is prob TLDR.

I have a 8 mo DS who I am still breast feeding and I also make his food, all organics etc... As we are approaching his first birthday, I am trying to research WCM to see if this is the way to go. Does anyone have any recs for literature, studies, documentaries etc...? Does anyone feed their child soy, almond, coconut, hemp or some other type of milk? Why did you choose this milk substitute? Anyone feed goat milk?

Just trying to start researching so that when the time comes I know I am making an informed decision. Hopefully I won't get flamed for this, tia for any responses!

Re: Question About Milk intro as well

  • No flames here. Both my kids nursed past a year, and so we didn't have them start WCM until they were both about 18 months. We did feed them a lot of yogurt and cheese, though.

We stick to organic whole milk ( my older son still drinks it at 4.5). If your baby doesn't have any dairy allergies, I would just stick to cow's milk. Milk alternatives can have a lot of sugar, soy isn't great in large quantities as it's an endocrine disrupter), and none of them have anything that you can't get from other foods. hth!

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • Thanks! He does eat a lot of organic whole milk yogurt and does well with that. I know standard WCM has a lot of hormones, puss, blood etc in it so he would definitely drink organic. I don't drink organic so I am not putting down anyone who uses regular WCM, just would go organic for DS. I agree soy in large quantities isn't good either but I know there are some proteins in milk humans can't break down. Some studies show that milk actually can contribute to osteoporosis rather than prevent it.

There's a TON of info out there and of course it's backed by different groups pushing their own agenda. I'm trying to weed through the bull shiit, pun intended, to figure out what I think is best. If nothing else it really has me thinking!

  • I had next to no supply so DS has been mostly formula since he was born and had no issues with cow milk.  However, in researching it seems like goat milk is closer to human milk and therefore easier to digest.  We plan on introducing that after his first birthday.  (He's 10 months now).

I did read that goat milk is low in folate (and Vitamin B12?) so you do have to make sure to find a brand that adds those in.

  • We don't do cow's milk with DS1. It isn't a part of my life, so it just naturally is not a part of his. he gets fermented dairy through yogurt and aged cheese, but many kids are dairy free and just fine. I don't feel any pressure to offer an alternative milk. We keep coconut or almond milk on hand for cooking and sometimes have a small glass of it, but not regularly. He self-weaned at 18 months, but I do sometimes give him a cup of BM if I have pumped milk that DS1 isn't going to finish.
  • Nina Planck writes a lot about milk, and especially the importance of whole milk:

This is a better link, but you have to log in to read it...travel.nytimes.com/2006/02/12/opinion/.../12CIplanck.html

She also has a book about feeding babies and toddlers, it's a good read (though by no means a how-to guide):

I think there are much worse things that a kid can consume besides cow's milk, but there are plenty of other foods if you choose not to serve it. I drank it daily until I moved out of my parent's house, and now I barely touch the stuff as an adult!

My friend just recommended that author, thanks for the link! To further complicate things I will always have dairy around as I am a custom cake and cupcake designer/baker by trade. I do offer dairy free baked goods as well but it is much more expensive. Thanks to everyone for all the awesome responses btw!

My DS is 1mo and is still nursing so we've relied on any type of milk for nutritional purposes.  He had MSPI when was born so I was off cows milk and my DH and I both felt a lot better off dairy.  We use almond, rice, coconut or hemp milk for cooking and in cereal so DS eats it as well.  Lately he'll ask for milk from the fridge so we give him a bit of whatever we have around and he drinks it with no problem.  When my mother watches him she insists on giving him cows milk and I don't argue.  When he stops nursing I don't think I'll give him any else, just a balanced diet.  Many cultures around the world do not drink milk, it's not a must the way the food guide suggests it is.

I'm going to guess you mean 1 year old?  Haha.  I was reading this thinking "Whoa, my baby was nowhere near asking for milk from the fridge at 1 month!"

  • DD is MSPI so at the moment, I let her have some coconut milk mixed in with her oatmeal (she is only 6 months, so still having BM). I just don't want to waste my precious pumped milk on oatmeal. She loves it and they have unsweetened versions. I don't give her glasses to drink, since she still nurses. When she turns one, I plan to see if she has outgrown her allergy and can tolerate organic wcm. If not, we'll keep with the coconut milk and probably almond milk, but I don't want to do soy because of the endocrine issues. Also, if still nursing, they probably don't really need to drink much of other kinds of milk.

You are correct! My husband was raised in a little crazy corner of the world and his mother couldn't produce milk for him, so the family bought two goats; that's just how they handled it in that time/place. He is now a strapping, athletic 6'3" fellow. I like to joke that he gets his stubborn demeanour from the goats he was raised by. ;-)

    Oops!

I giggled over the same thing! They have goat milk at the organic markets around here too so that's definitely an option!
