Vision changes & Clomid

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone has experience with vision changes while on Clomid. On Friday, about an hour after I woke up, I started seeing a strobe light effect on the lower right side of my vision. It turned into a complete blur after a bit and finally I had a huge blind spot. I would look at the keyboard on my phone and only be able to really see and decipher the left side of it. It went away after about 30-40 minutes.

I've had Lasik so I'm making an appt. with my eye dr. but I had also read that vision changes were a side effect of Clomid, although rare.

Anyone experience something similar?

Also, went in for CD12 ultrasound today and had 1 - 21mm follie so I was able to trigger and I'm really excited!!!

TIA.

  • I didn't, but you should let your doc know about the vision issues.

  • I haven't experienced this but you need to call your RE asap. It's one of the more serious side effects w/ Clomid and he needs to know that you're having vision problems - if you need another round of treatments, it will probably change your treatment protocol bc some of the vision side effects with Clomid get worse with more cycles on it and some can be permanent.

(I'm trying to not scare you here, - it's true that a lot of the vision issues with Clomid will resolve on their own, too - but please realize you need to let your RE know this immediately.)

  • I have not had that side effect as a result of Clomid, but it sounds like one of the symptoms I get with a migraine.  I hope your eye doctor has some answers for you.

  • Morning!

This is my first month on clomid and I noticed vision changes. For me i noticed I had a hard time focusing.  People would come in my office and I just couldn't focus on them.  It didn't last long and now that I'm off clomid I don't notice any vision issues so hopefully yours goes away too.

TTC since Nov 2010 now moving on to Foster-Adopt! All welcome
  • I am seeing the RE tomorrow morning for a post-coital so I will definitely mention it to her!

Beach_Bum: I also had a hard time focusing. How long did it last for? It hasn't happened since for me.

I don't scare easily. I read it was a pretty serious side effect and that they will probably change my meds if I need another round. Thank you :)

  • I haven't had that happen, but I've had some definite changes in my contact / glasses prescriptions since I've started medicated cycles this year. My eye doctor said that's normal with fertility meds and that my prescriptions would probably change again once I am pregnant.

  • I had a similar strobe light effect during my first cycle of clomid. My dr said it normally happens when you go from a dark room to a light room. This was my case bc it occurred right after I woke up. My dr allowed me to stay on it bc it happened briefly and she said if I experienced it again she'd change my regimen. I've never experienced it again though so I'm glad! Good luck!

  • Let me chime in on this. I am an eye doctor and I see symptoms like this a lot. It sounds a lot like an ophthalmic migraine, which is usually strobing lights in the periphery followed by missing sections of vision and usually lasts 20 or so minutes. Sometimes a headache will follow, but not always. Vision should return after that 20 minute time. Usually these are stress related. However, since it sound like you may have been nearsighted previously (hence the LASIK), it is similar symptoms to a retinal problem, such as a hole or tear. Usually that would be more pinpoint light flashes followed by floaters. The vision loss would not return. It is very important to rule out a retinal hole or tear so I would get seen ASAP, however try not to worry because I'd put my money on an ophthalmic migraine, which are harmless (just scary). HTH. Let me know if I can answer anything else:-)

Thank you for your response! I had googled opthalmic migraine bc I did get a headache after. I also had headaches 2 days before! I am definitely making an appt. with my eye dr. to check it all out! It lasted for about 30 minutes and then it was perfectly fine afterwards.

    Thanks again!

I sure sounds like an ophthalmic migraine, but to be safe, go and get dilated and make sure your retinas are fine. Otherwise, they are normal and don't cause any harm. They are just scary!

  • I have definitely had vision issues on clomid. My glasses/contact prescription has changed since I started it 4 months ago, and it hadn't changed at all for 3 straight years until now. I am having trouble focusing when I change from looking at something close to something far. My vision starts out pretty clear in the morning, but it gets progressively worse as the day goes on. By evening I can't read street signs at all. A few days ago I ran over a curb pulling out of a parking lot because I couldn't see it. After that I decided not to drive after dark anymore. DH will have to be my taxi! I have also had 2 cornea infections since starting clomid, which I have never had in my life until now. So yeah, vision changes while on clomid can definitely happen! I agree with pp's, make sure your RE knows about it. My RE felt that the positives outweigh the negatives in my case since my follicles are responding so well, so I'm staying on it. I've only got two more cycles left before the lifetime max anyway. Good luck to you, I hope the vision issues go away soon!

Wow! That seems so extreme. Hopefully I won't need more Clo and I get KU this cycle!! I have 2 years worth of corrective surgery when I did my Lasik in March, so hopefully if there will be any changes, it'll happen in 2 years so I can get it corrected! Actually, none would be better. Lol.

    Goodluck on your next cycle!
