Maryland Babies

Recommendation please

So I'm almost 6 weeks along , but my insurance status is iffy right now. My husband has Blue Cross Blue Sheild , but I wont be added to the first of the year (long story). Anyway the problem is that I'm pg now so wouldn't this qualify as a pre-exsisting condition? Do any of you Baltimore moms/moms to be with or with out insurance have any obgyn recommendations ? i wanted to get the first ultra sound before thanksgiving since i will be about 8 weeks along by then. Thaks for any advice !

Re: Recommendation please

  • I was able to switch to my husband's insurance 2 months before my son was born. The insurance was not effective until January which was just 2 weeks before my son arrived!  We never really thought much about switching to the same insurance until I was pregnant and we had to wait until his open season to add me to his policy.  It was also Blue Cross Blue Shield.  They did not consider pregnancy a pre-existing condition and I was able to switch over to his insurance without any issues.

  • I may be entirely off here but I thought they eliminated preexisting conditions with the beginning of health care reform two years ago. As I also worried about that when I was pregnant with DS and switched to my husbands insurance when I was four months pregnant.

  • I'm not sure if the reform thing has gone through yet, however, you can't be turned down for preexisting conditions unless you've had a 69 day or greater lapse in your coverage.

  • Thank you so much melissabender ! My husband has blue cross as well so this is some welcome news. I will have him call them tomorrow so we can get this sorted out :)

I *think* this takes effect when you renew your coverage, so if your husbands policy renews in January, they shouldn't be able to deny you coverage for pregnancy-related care.

Definitely call and see!  If the person you speak with doesn't know, keep asking to speak with managers until you find someone who does.  That's what I had to do when my pedi's office kept taking copays for well child visits.

I have BCBS Blue Choice (open access).

  • you can't sign up for coverage unless its either open enrollment or you have a "qualifying" event - qualifiying event normally means either you or your husband change/lose a job, become disabled, or get married/divorced, or a new child is born or adopted.  Being pregnant is not considered a qualifying event.

  • Thans so much everone for all the great information ! Just wanted you all to know that being pg is not a pre existing conditon so I will have coverage on January 1 st! I do have to pay out of pocket for the first screening, but I thank God we are in a position that it is not a financial hardship.
