Trying to Get Pregnant

Regular Cycles = Ovulating?

Hi ladies,

I tried Dr. Google, but I trust what I read here on the boards more than anything I've found online.

My DH and I have been TTC for 5 cycles don't worry, I know it's not a long time to be trying. I told myself I would start temping when/if we made it past the 6 month mark without a BFP.

My question is: do regular cycles (27-32 days since January 2012) mean I'm ovulating? Are regular cycles possible if I don't ovulate? I hope this question isn't flame worthy, I'm just looking for your help :-)

Thanks!!!

ETA: Punctuation. Tried Bumping from my phone...

Re: Regular Cycles = Ovulating?

  • I'm new here and by no stretch, am I an expert but I believe the answer is no, regular periods do not mean that you're ovulating. I learned that because my whole life I've had regular cycles and my second cycle temping, I did not ovulate, but it was still a "regular"cycle for me.

  • PS - if you click on the link to my chart, the bottom chart is my anovulatory cycle and the top is my current cycle, when I did ovulate. You can see the difference.

  • PP is  right-  a "normal" cycle doesn't mean O. But don't assume you aren't ovulating because you aren't pregnant yet. Start temping, use OPK and get to know what's going on with your body. Good luck!

    TTC#2 Since July 2011
Me: 29, had two blocked tubes - left was cleared during lap, right was unable to be cleared. PCOS & Stage 2 Endo. DH: 32, SA = perfect
    CLOMID: 4 rounds, 50mg + TI = BFN's. FEMARA: 1 round = no response
12-24-2012 : Laparoscopy, Softball sized cyst/endo/scar tissue removed.
Cycle #14 - Feb 2013 : 50mg clomid. Ovidrel Trigger. IUI on 2/14/13 = thin lining, multiple cysts.
Cycle #15 - no meds, still have cysts, no follicles. Boo!
Forced break. Continuous BCP for 6 weeks to give my jacked up ovaries a break.
Cycle #16 actively trying (May/June): Femara, TI = BFN
    Cycle #17- #20 - Med/Treatment break, trying on our own = BFN's all around.
Cycle #21 - Femara, MORE Femara, Ovidrel and a Christmas IUI = BFN

  • Ditto PP, you can have regular cycles but not O. They could be completely anovulatory, or you may have one missed cycle in the mix and O the rest.

The only way to know for sure is to temp. OPKs help as well.

ETA: I know you said you didn't want to start temping yet, but I said that at first as well, and I'm SO glad I started.

I see the difference in the two cycles, but you know you're ovulating in the top one why? Because after the dip, you stayed above the cover line for 3 days?

(I plan on temping if I get a BFN this cycle, so I'm trying to learn what I'm looking for).

Yes, basically. Sign up for FF and they have some tutorials you can take if you haven't already!

  • Regular cycles do not mean you are ovulating.  The only way to know for sure is to track your BBT.  Is there a reason you want to wait until 6 months to start doing that?  When you aren't aware of when you are Oing, if at all, it makes it that much harder to have good timing.

Ditto. I was anti-temping for four cycles, got frustrated. I've temped the last one and the current one and I'm SO glad I did. I feel a lot more in control, there's much less guesswork, etc. Once it becomes a habit it's not annoying/anything you think about much. GL!

I don't think I'm necessarily antitemping. I guess I'm hopeful that our timing will work out? But now that I'm typing this out, temping seems like a real pain in the buttski. Props to those out there who've been temping all along! Hopefully we never get to that point. If we do, I'll be looking for your help and encouragement.

We just started cycle number 5 and I decided to start temping, I'm really hopeing to see what happens with this, plus I bought some OPT so that I have a better chance of hitting the ovulation window. Good luck!

While it is possible to have regular cycles and not ovulate, it is not likely. Normally an anovulatory cycle is longer because the hormones required to start a period are out of whack because ovulation never occurred. Most likely you are ovulating. It is possible you are simply missing your fertile window though.
