Buying used items

Hello! My wife and I are interested in purchasing some used items for our baby but wanted to get your opinion on it.

1) Have you ever purchased a used item for your baby?  What are your top three criteria when consider purchasing used baby goods?

2) What are your concerns when you buy used baby goods?

3) If you haven't bought a used product for your baby, why?

I really appreciate any insight you could provide!

Re: Buying used items

  • 1. I buy used all the time, we're on a budget. Top three criteria is that the item is not recalled and in good condition (for gear, toys etc), priced appropriately compared to buying the same item new (check that it's not on sale), and that it's something we will actually use (I'm not into gimmicky items).

    2. My concerns about used clothing - not much, as long as they're in new or nearly new condition. I would wash regardless. Anything else, that it is working, no broken pieces, and no missing parts.

    3. I don't ever ever ever buy used car seats. Ever. Unless this is someone you know very well (like a relative) and you can absolutely guarantee that the seat has never been in an accident or dropped, or even washed improperly (yes, there is a correct way to wash a seat, not doing so wrecks the webbing and removes the fire retardant, and can weaken seams, you may not necessarily see it). Not an item I'll try and save money that way. I stalk sales instead. I got a $350 car seat for $235, that to me was a good deal.

  • I think about the washablity of an item. For example, I am all about used clothes that I can throw in the washer, but I get more nervous regarding things that I'm not sure how I would clean.

I buy used off of craigslist or at consignment sales.
