I really like my Ergo but didn't get it until DD was 8 months old. I'm wondering if it's worth it to get the insert dor DD2. Can I use receiving blankets or a towel to do the same thing?
The insert has a special cushion in it for the baby to sit on to protect their spine is what I read. It was nice and easy to use but did get quite warm.
Honestly, I'd probably take the money you'd spend on an insert and buy a carrier that is more newborn friendly - you could get a ring sling or moby for the same amount - and use the ergo when baby is a bit older - but I'm not a fan of the Ergo for babies not big enough to big legs out
You can use blankets to achieve the same effect. The insert is designed to make the carrier fit baby snuggly to prevent slumping and keep baby in an upright position. Blankets will work but the insert is more error proof.
I loved it and more importantly my DD loved it. I also had a Bjorn that i put her in starting at about 3 weeks. Se like that too but i think she liked the Ergo insert better. As did I. The ergo is so comfortable to wear. I tried a sling and DD hated it. Although it was not a stretchy fabric like some of them. I think stretchy slings would be more comfortable for baby
I think it depends on how you're going to use the Ergo. I much prefer the Moby for baby wearing around the house and when out at social functions/dinners where I am sitting a good bit of the time. It keeps the baby nice and snuggly with me and my DS naps in it most of the time.
However, I prefer the Ergo for when I'm going on walks with the baby or running errands. I feel like it's sturdier and I have better use of my arms. Maybe I"m doing something wrong with the Moby, but I find that sometime my DS will begin to sink in it and after a few hours it feels like he is less stabile in it.
The Ergo insert is hot, it doesn't keep your LO as close to you as the Moby/slings and I don't like sitting in the Moby for long periods of time.
The insert is very warm for baby - so depending when they're born and where you live it might not be worth it? (My DD3 was born in July and it was just too hot of a summer for her to be in it comfortably when we were outside - a/c'd places were fine, but not outside even when she was wearing just a onsie and hat).
Lurker here. I just recently purchased the Ergo and have heard from several people to not bother with the insert and use a blanket instead. I roll up a recieving blanket, fold it twice, place it in the bottom, and DS2 just sits in there without his legs hanging out. Since he is still so little I provided some support to his head with my hand. I know that defeats the purpose of the carrier allowing your hands to be free, but I know it is only temporary until he has better head control.
