Options for baby proofing banisters?

I'm on the verge if having a mobile baby so I'm looking at ways to baby proof the banister that surrounds the entrance to the stairs to our basement. We have one of those open plan houses that rather than enclosing the basement stairs with a wall, it's left open and, instead has a wrought iron railing that is about 10 feet on one side and 3 feet on the short end. In my searches, I've found 2 basic products: the Safety 1st Railnet and the Kidkushion banister guard. I guess either of those will work but I was wondering if anyone had seen any other products or created a simple solution of their own? I guess I was just hoping for more options.

 Thanks!

  • Im a little confused, Are you trying to pad the bars or prevent things from falling through?

This, what are you trying to accomplish? Just trying to keep LO from throwing things through it? We have banisters but didn't do anything with them and haven't had a problem.

  • Are you worried about LO falling through?  I have an older home and the part of our upstairs all way is open to the stairs below with a wooden rail/spindles.  They are at enough apart that LO could a silly slip through.  We bought a piece of plexiglass and screwed it into the banister.  This was less expensive and sturdier than the netting you can buy.  I'm not sure it would work with wrought iron unless you had wood or some wallspace nearby to anchor it to.

  • i have the kidkushion on our upstairs landing and it's terrific. LO can't try to squeeze through and when you're downstairs you can't even tell that it's there.

Definitely to keep him from squeezing through. The bars are spaced wide enough for his body to slip through but not his head.

  • DS was throwing toys between the slats of our bannister and was sticking his feet through the rails. I was nervous about a toy hitting someone walking below the bannister. We bought a roll of plexiglass off Amazon. It came with zipties to secure it to the rails. We have a wooden bannister. It works great.

  • One Step Ahead has a clear banister barrier.  The 15 foot roll is  item #22194 and the 5 foot is #09756.  I just got their magazine in the mail today and was paging through it.
