Toddlers: 24 Months+

Finally have power but I think a nervous toddler - thoughts?

We survived the storm better than our neighbors here.  8 houses condemned in our town from fallen trees and a massive tree fell down the street from us.

My daughter threw up every night at 2 or 3 in the morning since Monday.  She was good Wednesday and Thursday night.  We got power back yesterday and it was the first day I took her out and about.  We went for a walk to her friends house just to get out.  She saw the damage around us.

Last night she threw up again at 4:30.  Just liquid small amount and eating cereal now.  She woke at 7:30 asking DH if he saw all those trees on houses and they don't have power, but our house works now.  She also told us her princesses were safe.

Think this is nerves?  Any suggestions?  Will it just take time?  My parents are in the mist of the destruction, but obviously she has no idea that her favorite places at the shore have washed away, but I'm sure she is feeling the tension here.

THANK YOU!!!!

  • My 2yo is very sensitive to the needs of others.  Now that your power is back on maybe you can involve your daughter in a simple task that would help others. Make a simple meal to take to a neighbor who is still without power, gather a few toys to take to a storm shelter, or something similar.  We have a neighbor going through chemo.  My grandma recently passed away from cancer, so my inquisitive 2yo already knows a bit about it.  Along with taking a few meals to the older couple, we've taken on the simple task of returning their garbage can after the garbage men come. My son has really taken ownership of this chore and he feels so helpful. The walk up the long country driveway gives us an opportunity to talk about how sometimes we need help, but when we don't we can be thankful we are able to help others.  Seeing that she has the power & ability to help those who have experienced destruction on a greater level may ease her mind some, and help her realize how strong Americans are- especially when we all lend a hand!

  • It maybe a combo of nerves and sickness... We were without power for a little over 3 days and it def took its toll! The house got down to 49degrees! (thank goodness for the fireplace!)... But we're all sick now :-( But the fact that it's happening at the same time each night and her talking about what she's seen with your DH does lead one to believe it could be nightmares she's experiencing... Def agree with pp...let her know how people helped put your lights back on and how we are all helping one another.
