Bed sharing and nursing?

DS2 goes to bed in a PnP beside my bed, he was waking so often that I now just bring him into bed and we bed share the rest of the night.  It is not my first choice, but I wasn't getting any sleep.  I find I don't really pay any attention to how often I am nursing through the night.

I guess my question is, do most of you who bed share just let LO nurse all night whenever they want (like graze to put themselves to sleep) or do you wake, do a full nurse, change LO's diaper and put them back to bed.

Re: Bed sharing and nursing?

  • When LO was really little, I sat up and put him on the boppy, nursed him, and then changed his diaper and went to sleep. That didn't last long...

Once he didn't need diaper changes during the night, but was still too little to let sleep as long as he wanted, I stopped keeping track. He was a very little baby, so I set an alarm for every 3 hours so that I could wake him to feed him if necessary, but he would always wake to nurse before that.

Now he just nurses whenever he wants. I usually sleep shirtless or in a nursing tank, and he rolls over and finds the boob on his own. He likes to sleep latched for a while, roll over and face away from me for a bit, and then roll back and nurse some more, all in his sleep. If he doesn't find the boob easily, he starts to fuss and I wake up and re-position him.

I don't keep track of how much he nurses during the night, but he is happy, my supply is perfect, and his weight gain is good. :)

  • I was pretty strict about making DS wait 2 hours between feedings, even at night, to make sure he got full feeds.  When he grazed he seemed to only get the fore milk, get runnier stool, and wake up more often b/c his thirst was quenched, but he was still hungry.  Once he started eating solids I would nurse on demand, but by then he was only waking 2x a night & would sometimes do a full nurse, and sometimes just pacify.  I was against pacifiers at 1st, but since DS was only happy when sucking we used one from 2m-9m so we could all get more sleep.  I'd say it depends on the age of LO, how your milk supply is holding up & how sleep deprived you currently are :)

  • I have a co sleeper attached to the bed.  I pull E in to bed with me when he fusses or wants to nurse or just snuggle.  I let him nurse whenever he wants, which at this point is about 2-3ish times a night.  My older DS nursed much more frequently throughout the night, more like grazing.  I never wake up to diaper change, etc., I just roll over and give him the jug and pop it out when he's done.  Easy peasy.

  • Morning.
I just let baby boy nurse when he wants and he also grazes through the night. I'm also not really sure how much he nurses but on the whole we all get enough sleep this way as we don't really fully wake and both doze back of when he is done or even mid suckle. He is 14mth now and we have been doing it this way for about 8mth since he stopped pooping in the night. I personally think whatever gives you both the most sleep is the way to go.:

Baby nurses as many times as he wants, whenever he wants. I only wake up when he starts grunting for the other side and I switch and he nurses back to sleep.
