My bad sleeper is getting worse

Since pretty much the beginning, LO has fought sleep.  I was NEVER able to even attempt the whole ?put them down drowsy? thing, because LO goes from happy to FUSSSSSSY to (with lots of effort) sleep.  Now, at 5 months, he?s not so hard to get to fall asleep, but he still goes through the fussy stage.  He nurses to sleep, and I put him in his crib asleep.  Often he wakes up as I put him in his crib.  Sometimes I can get him to fall back asleep without picking him back up and rocking him.  He doesn?t stay asleep long, but that?s beside the point right now.

Here lately he has been waking up multiple times in the night ANGRY.  He fusses & fights, kicking his legs so hard & energetically he manages to get them out of the leg holes of his jammies.  I pick him up to soothe him, but that doesn?t even help.  He?s sort of ?crying? but there?s no tears.  Nothing I do seems to help, if I offer him the boob he doesn?t want it (I am usually pretty sure he?s not hungry, but I do this just in case).  So I end up holding him as he shrieks it out and he falls back asleep.

I?m at a loss at what is going on.  From my understanding night terrors don?t begin until closer to toddlerhood.  He seems SO angry & upset.  He is awake for this, as his eyes are open and he?s alert.  Has ANYONE else?s baby done this??  He wakes up in the morning, happy like normal.

  • I know it sounds counter productive but my now two year old did this and the only thing that helped was to turn on the lights and wake him up all the way before trying to nurse him back to sleep. It was almost line a night terror but not exactly. He out grew it good luck

  • Hmmmm, have you ruled out things like an ear infection or teething, something that could be causing him pain in his sleep?

  • Thanks for the tips y'all!

He did just get over an ear infection, when he had that he was waking up in pain, but it was different because he was actually crying, and it was his "painful " cry. I don't think it's teething, I keep feeling around and he's not cutting any yet. Oddly, last night he finally slept good! Thank goodness!

  • Im visiting from the April board. My baby is 6.5 months now and she has done this since she was five weeks old. I have no idea if it is a night terror or what. My husband had them pretty bad when he was little and his mom said he did this as a baby. As she has gotten older it has improved a little. She still wake up and fusses a lot but not the crazy crying in her sleep. I would say she went from doing it every night to only once a week or less. It really did help to turn on a light and wake her up. After she is calm, I rock her back to sleep. (I know rocking is a bad habit but it works)
