3rd Trimester

Sore Throat, but only evenings and middle of the night?

I have this strange symptom that has come out of nowhere. Never had it with any prior PG. I get a pretty bad sore throat but only during the evenings and it's get worse in the middle of the night. Everything I read says dry heat might be the cause and I should try a humidifier but curious if anyone else has experienced something similar. I don't think it's PG related, but worth asking.

Re: Sore Throat, but only evenings and middle of the night?

  • Are you congested at all?  Sometimes post nasal drip can do that and you may have more towards the end of the day.  Just a thought but I am not entirely sure!!!!

  • Is it possible you're breathing through your mouth when you're sleeping? Or are you somewhat congested during the day? I have a problem with slight drainage most of the time (not enough to say I'm stuffed up, just enough to annoy me) and I get this way some evenings and most mornings when I wake up (from breathing through my mouth at night)

  • Reflux can lead to a sore throat because of the acidity of the material re-entering your throat (and sometimes your airway) while you sleep. My throat is usually a bit rough/sore in the middle of the night and when I first wake up because my reflux is so bad now.

  • Thank you! I think it is a combination of post nasal drip and reflux.... Oy...the joys of PG.

  • It may be dry heat + the runny noses associated with pregnancy (I only got the runny nose thing in 1st trimester though).  We are in IL and started putting our heat on at night, even with the whole house humidifier it seems dry this year, so I got one of those little ones to put in the room also.  Sometimes I even crack the window since its been cold but still rainy/humid outside.  Hope you feel better!
  • You might be having some acid reflux. I have the same thing, and on really bad nights, my throat feels raw the next day (like today, actually).

Taking a daily antiacid recomended by your doctor will help, as will sleeping propped up and eating earlier and smaller evening meals.

In case of "dear god, I can't take it, it feels like I'm barfing" emergencies (as some of us hearburn during PG veterans have) taking a shot of Malox or other stomach capping medicine is ok during pregnancy. But get your doc's ok before you try.
