Cloth Diapering outside the US

I saw a post further back about different types of soaps to use pertaining to Germany, but I thought I would ask a couple other questions. (I am relatively new to CDs)

For those outside the US, (especially in the UK) what brands of diapers work best for you?

What type of detergent do you use?

 Do you CD when traveling?

Where can I find snappies or something similar to them?

Right now, I have primarily Bumgenius, but I did try some Totsbots and Thirstie Duo prefolds.  We CD during the day only and at night she is in a disposable-mostly because I brought about 5 large boxes of diapers over from the States when we moved and I am trying to use them up.

Thanks!

Re: Cloth Diapering outside the US

  • I'm done with my CDing now (thanks to early PTing) but love to talk real nappies. ;)

I used BG with my son, when we needed fast-drying ones, but switched to more flats (I used terry squares as well as green mountain prefolds my mom brought over), Ella's and Tots Bots sized and Motherease one size. I love my Tots Bots and Motherease.. I've found they work best at different times. I'd never have done flats on a toddler who hates sitting still for diaper changes, but they were great for hte first 9 months? I prefer the 2-part system for containment and more of an old-fashioned feel, but I loved the ease of the pockets.

I never liked British PFs, I found them awkward shaped, which is why I plumped for GM ones when M was born.

We also used disposables at ngiht. Mine were never great sleepers, so it was easier to avoid the risk of wetting and waking. And then with M, we had a risk of UTIs, so I didn't want her to sleep in a wet nappy and increase the risk of that. I've heard that Bamboozles and Ellas are great for overnight, and I have some Motherease Sandys (toddlerease) which I was planning on using for M, until it was irrelevant.

I've always used Ecover non-bio and never had a problem with smells or needing to strip, etc. I used to do two separate washes on our old machine (one cold and one hot, 60C) but now just do a prewash and was at 60C.  It might depend on where you live though and water type. I know our water is completely different than my PIL in Oxfordshire..

I never used cloth while travelling because of the bulk and hassel of washing, or ruining diapers while waiting for a wash. (And the stress of borrowing MIL's washer for nappies, it wasn't worth it, but she's a stressy woman...)

Oh, and if you want snappies, I have some. Let me know if you want and I'll post them to you. Otherwise, cloth nappy websites, kittykins, twinkleontheweb, etc. Also, check out the clothnappytree for advice and information. :)

  • I get must of my diapers and accessories from funky monkey pants who are based out of the UK. https://www.funkymonkeypants.com/

We mostly use Bambinex bamboo fitteds with snappiest and Thursties duo covers. At night we use bububebe fitteds and fleece PJs or a wool cover.

When we travel we use Naturebaby care diapers I believe boots sell them. They are missing most of the nasty chemicals and don't smell horrible. We do still use covers with them, I much prefer was a cover than deal with poop covered clothes while traveling!!

  • We use Bum Genuis mostly, and a few other AIO's/AI2's.

I just ordered crunchy clean to try as a detergent, as it got good reviews for hard water.

We do use sposies at night still..trying to find cloth that doesn't leak overnight!

Yeah, Thirsties were my favourite covers by far, for fit and affordability - but I suppose that depends on your little one.

  • Bum gEnius  mainly but also some fitteds/covers

    Biokleen detergent

Yes when traveling. While on the 24hr plane trip, I used flip covers with disposable liners. One package lasted 4 flights (plus still have half pack left).

Sorry, I finally found time to respond to the post.  With DH out of the country now and a fussy baby I could not get on here sooner...

I would love the snappies, if you have them. Let me know how much you would like for them and thank you :)

  • I have some Totbots that I used on DS. I liked them, but never had enough to ever do them properly. Next time I am thinking of using a nappy service. Down here in Bournemouth there is a service that charges ?6 a week for newborns and ?9 a week for bigger ones. They provide all the nappies you need and then take them away once a week and clean them. Its around the same cost as disposables so I might as well try it. And I can still claim around ?35 back from the council for using them.

You can have them for the postage, if you'd like. You have a PM. :)

  • I just moved to the UK 2 months ago and just brought my entire CD stash over from the US. However I have seen GroVias at my neighborhood baby boutique and they also stock Tiny Bubbles (we are in Greenwich).

When we flew over here we were anticipating about 14 hours door to door, and since CDs can be bulky we used sposies for the trip. Next week we are on vacation, just a few hours away and we will have a laundry machine so we will probably CD.
