Chai Latte?

Sorry if this has been posted before... I tried to google but got weird results, anyway I have Keurig so pretty much anything I drink is from a  K-Cup, Chai latte says it has less than 10mg caffeine (from the black tea) and some spices (cardamom, cinnamon, clove) and then honey milk and sugar or something like that... is anyone drinking chai lattes? and I know there was a post about it the other day did we come to the conclusion that Black tea was a safe tea to drink?

side note: when I googled it there was a big discussion about it containing anise (some do not, the one have does not contain anise) and how anise can cause miscarriage... whaaaaaaatt??? first time I ever heard this... I ate half a dozen pizzelle cookies the other day?

  • I LOVE tea and have a cup - sometimes two (like 10oz cups) of caffinated tea everyday.      From my limited tea knowledge I've always understood Chai to have more caffiene than any other tea.  However, with yours being a latte and the milk being added it may be less.

I make my own tea from tea leaves and ended up buying decaf chai because of the high caffiene content in the regular.

  • Hmmmm Chai Latte! LOVE IT!

Your question got me curious, and here's what I was able to find out

    (from https://www.babycenter.com/0_herbal-teas-during-pregnancy_3537.bc)

    Which teas are not safe?

Many of the herbs used for teas, when taken in large or medicinal amounts, can potentially stimulate the uterus and induce miscarriage. These include anise, catnip, chamomile, comfrey, ephedra (called ma huang in traditional Chinese medicine), European mistletoe, hibiscus, horehound, Labrador, lemongrass, licorice root, mugwort, pennyroyal, raspberry leaf, rosemary, sage, sassafras, stinging nettle leaf, vetiver, and yarrow.

That list DOES include anise, but it also says it can POTENTIALLY induce miscarriage when taken in LARGE AMOUNTS. I doubt the quantity found in your Chai Latte is anywhere near a "large amount". In fact, I also found this (https://www.wisegeek.com/how-safe-is-anise-in-pregnancy.htm#lbimages)

Small amounts of anise in pregnancy can be safe, but patients should avoid anise essential oil and other concentrates. Patients with high-risk pregnancies also may be advised to avoid anise altogether to reduce the chances of going into premature labor. It is also important for people to be aware that anise (Pimpinella anisum) and star anise (Illicium verum), sometimes also called Chinese star anise, are two different herbs that should be handled differently. Chinese star anisecomes with some additional risks.

    (...)

Plain anise seeds as used in small amounts in herbal teas and cooking are generally safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding because exposure is relatively low. Essential oil and concentrates, however, are more dangerous, and should be avoided because of concerns that they might trigger contractions.

    And then this (https://www.livestrong.com/article/145266-anise-in-aromatherapy/)

    Warning

If you are pregnant, you should only use anise medicinally under the supervision of a health practitioner. It's safe for culinary use or to use in cosmetics, though, according to the authors of "Women's Herbs, Women's Health."

So  in other words, I wouldn't worry about it :D

  • I love my chai lattes from Starbucks!!!  I only stop once a week, but don't feel bad when I do.  Here's the info on their caffeine content, which isn't anywhere near high enough to cause concern.  It doesn't say if their version includes anise but even if it did, I would imagine the amount wouldn't be large enough to cause concern.  Enjoy your warm cozy chai during these brisk fall days!

  • I buy the concentrate from Target to make my own.  I have one almost every day, half chai, half soy milk.  My last trip, I saw they had decaf so I bought that instead, tastes the same so I figure, why not.

ETA: there is so little anise in it, I'm not worried.
